Direct-Hire and Academy Pay

I'm trying to find some information on how the academy pay works. I understand "typically" is AG pay + per diem.

Multiple questions.

If we go to the academy knowing our facility & are prior experience, is the pay based off of your facilities D1+per diem?

Does anyone have experience subleasing and was it an ass pain? Seems like a way to save quite a bit while at the academy.

Thanks for any help y'all can provide!

You'll get AG pay for the first couple weeks then go up to your facilities D1. You'll also get per diem but it's a seperate check. But if you're a direct hire doesn't that mean you skip the Academy?

I went through the academy when they sent every new hire regardless of background. Don't think pay has changed since it is written into the bargaining agreement. I went through the tower course but several people in my unit went through other courses. Here's how pay was handled for each:

Tower: AG at academy, bottom of lowest D band after graduation.
Enroute: AG at academy, bottom of D1 band after graduation.
TRACON: AG at RTF, bottom of lowest D band after graduating RTF. This was the same even if TSEW was a follow on course before reporting to the assigned facility.

When you knew what facility you were going to locality was based off of the facility's locality. I think it's DC locality for anyone that doesn't know where they are going before graduation.

I was getting D1 at the Academy as a VRA hire in 2014. They do this for the prior experience bids as well.

OP: when you say direct hire, what bid were you hired on? are you prior experience or OTS? If you're OTS, you'll be AG pay until you get 25% of positions at your facility. If you're prior experience you'll get D1 at the Academy

My situation is a bit complicated but I was "hired" Jan 2014 under VRA application. Direct ZOA but still required schoolhouse. I'm still active duty until the end of this year but will be on terminal leave in Sept. Just got "redirected" to ZDV. Did they end back paying you for those first few academy weeks to match D1 facility pay?

Reference your first question; Even though I was direct, since its en-route I still have to go the academy. No, I do not have any radar experience.

Ok, that's not a direct hire. That's just the old hiring system where you knew where you were going before the Academy. You will get AG pay through basics I believe, then D1. No, it doesn't backpay you from the beginning as D1. It should say your salary on your FOL, including Denver locality. That's what you'll be getting after basics.

I have a buddy going through the OTS process that is hoping to get a level 5 or 6 tower only, anyone know at what positions youd get raises at?

I believe so, since it’s usually gc/cd/fd combined majority of the time. I’m sure someone with first hand knowledge will chime in though.

I’ll add that if he got in thru the OTS bid but was prior mil he’d be paid the lowest D pay band initially not AG.

Nope. Your pay goes off what bid your were hired on, so even though he might have been a prior mil controller he'll still get the same pay as anyone else off an OTS bid. And if he is prior mil but not prior ATC then that doesn't mean anything for pay.

No. You just had to be a prior military controller. I was never tower in the military so never had a CTO.
Prior to my being hired (in November) HR called and needed a copy of my military CTO (from 12 years ago) otherwise I was going to be on the AG band. Thankfully I was able to find a copy of it. I had a current CTO from a FCT but she said that only counted for the 52 weeks, not the D-band scale.

Hmm.. that’s very weird if a RAPC doesn’t get you in the D1 band. Were you dual qualified?

Yeah and if you didn't have a CTO they would have asked for documentation for your RAPC. It wasn't your CTO they needed, it was proof of being a certified military controller. Considering I don't have and have never held a CTO and yet started at D1.
