FAA CTO Rating Overseas

Hello everyone,

I have been thinking about a change in my career path and was contemplating about a career in doing air traffic control overseas. I’ve been doing a lot of investigating into if it as possible to get an FAA CTO overseas at one of the contract locations and I cannot find any answers. I thought it would come on here to inquire more about it.

I have done my research into to all the overseas contractors and I know which ones provide air traffic control tower services for the Middle East or even Antarctica. I know one of the companies advertises for requirements that you need at least a minimum of a CTO certificate of grades (which I do have) and I know a little bit about each of them both through colleagues and combing through the other message board. I’m just not sure which one to go with and if any of them will accept me but I’m willing to make the jump.

So I ask you guys the previous question: is it possible to get an FAA CTO at one of their overseas locations and if I were to decide that I want to transfer back to the United States I could use it there? If not, would any of the contractors take something like an ICAO CTO rating?

Big fat no! Not if all you have is the CTO test. You need actual tower experience for a contract tower overseas to mess with you.

I understand that may also be a big hurdle, I am also asking if you get an FAA rating if I were to work overseas.

Idk if it’s officially considered an FAA CTO but it does count towards the 52 weeks of controlling time you need for the experienced bid. Both of my ctos were from Afghanistan that got me hired on with the Faa with zero experience stateside, go army lol

I got an FAA CTO when I was controlling in Iraq while in the Marines. So, it is possible. I can’t tell you for sure if you still can though because this was over a decade ago. I would contact the specific facility your looking to apply at and ask them.

You were both trained as ATCs in the US, just actual time controlling/qualifying experience was deployed.

This isn't the same as someone who isn't a controller in the military going overseas. The FAA has no authority outside of the US and they don't oversee any facilities.

You can work an ICAO tower and still receive an FAA CTO through that tower if its military. I've seen facilities in the service that will have a military FAA CTO examiner and issue an FAA CTO through the FAA for that tower the same as joker342 below said, but my experience was navy.

This got me thinking, if you have ICAO ATC experience that is at least 52 weeks could you be hired by the FAA if you meet all other requirements?

The FAA does not recognize international ATC (Nav Canada, etc.) as prior experiance.

That is my intentions. I would be looking into places such as Kandahar or Kuwait. I’m not sure who holds the contracts with those towers along with the other ones because I know they are constantly changing I I know one of them advertises Kandahar but you may be actually working on an FOB.
