Rotating Days Off

Is there anyone on here that works at a facility that has rotating days off? I'm trying to get some ideas to propose rotating days off to my facility. Do these schedules typically rotate days off weekly, monthly, or every few months? How are these schedules generally perceived by the membership? Anyone have any examples of the schedules they work? Thanks for any input you guys can provide.

We used to do it but they stopped it at my facility the year before I got there. So I never actually participated in it myself. I might be able to dig up an older schedule in the Natca office.

From my understanding, it benefited the low seniority folks because they would get weekends off every 6 weeks I think it was. Some loved it, some hated it. To me, it seems like it would be consistently inconsistent. Lol

We do a modified wheel here. Rotates every week but your RDOs get split every 6 weeks on the front end and back end so you get 2 Sat/Suns off in a row. There's pros and cons, been that way for years and there's no shot it's changing anytime soon. The senior guys pretty much all like it. But it might not be a great example because the culture around our schedule is extremely flexible. And that flexibility subsidizes a lot of the cons.

Seems like PDOs are more common. And I'd bet it's an impossible task to get support for a rotation from senior controllers if PDOs is the incumbent.

We were all on rotating schedules when I first got to my facility. 14 people, 7 crews of 2 and we were all on 4 ten hour shifts. Every 4 weeks our rdo's shifted down a day. If you were off T/W/T the next rotation you'd be off M/T/W. Personally, I loved it. It works out great for people low in seniority that have a significant other that works a normal Mon-Fri 9-5. The weekends you're off together are great then when you're not, you both have time to yourself. Everyone gets Sunday pay. By nature this benefits lower seniority people the most but the highest seniority guys like it because there'd be some lines that had every major holiday off, which they snagged.
As far as an evolution went, it changed as our staffing changed. We would always discuss what we wanted. One year we found that 7 people wanted fixed days off so we had 7 on fixed days off and 7 rotating.
Once it came to a point where nobody had a significant other the worked a M-F job and couldn't get weekends, we all went to fixed days off.

I work flight service, not actual atc (yet, awaiting fol) but we run with a mix of fixed days off and rotating rdo's. Our rotating shifts shifta a day back every 5 weeks so depending on the days off you have you get the occasional 4 day work week, but on the other end you get a one day weekend occasionally. It does tend to benefit new hires, you either get weekends off twice a year (early in the year and at the end) or weekends off sometime during summer so each has its pros and cons.

Unfortunately, PDOs are the incumbent at my facility. But, since I work at a center and we routinely bid around 42 people, I think that we could incorporate some type of hybrid schedule with PDOs and RDOs mixed in there. With 7 crews and 6 lines/crew, we could have 1 line per crew of RDOs and that would only affect 1/6 of the schedule.

Just curious which FSS does this?

Prior to my hiring into the FAA in 2012 I worked at the L/M Ashburn, VA FSS and we did this. When I worked there some lines were permanent RDO and others were rotating. It was all on what you wanted to bid on.

My facility has rdos. Personally i love it. We rotate every 5th week so occasionally youll have the week where you work 6 days, but you also get your 4 day week and everyone gets weekends off 2x a year, so its neat. Most the dev are smart enough to rdo swap with themselves to see weekend traffic so they can get certified. I guess the downside is i often times have no idea what day of the week it is.
