I am starting the academy in February 2022 for basics. Was curious if anyone else starts around that time as well? Would like to chat with those of you that will be in basics around that time. As well as those who also are projected to begin in person classes in March 2022.

Do they start classes on Tuesday’s or is that a mistake?
Hmm I'm not sure. My HR person emailed me and said February 15 was my start date. I suppose that could be an error. I may check with my HR person and make sure.

In any event, have you been able to find any study materials to try and learn some things ahead of time? I have someone that has been through the academy within the past couple of years that is supposed to help me out and send me some stuff. I would be happy to share whatever I get with you once I get it.

I just assumed they only started on Monday but I could be completely wrong about that. Anyway I’m not going to other studying beforehand except for the alphabet. No sense in learning something the wrong way and having to try to correct it once you get there. From what I’ve read browsing through here your more so learning and doing things that way your specific instructor wants you to do them than the technically correct way for lack of a better term.

I get that. Could be we are in two different virtual classes and yours starts on Monday and mine on Tuesday. Guess we will find out. Have you decided where you are going to house at in OKC? I am going to do Kims place.

I was leaning towards Anatole just for the sake of living alone instead of with a stranger but I’m not sure if they’re furnished or not. I don’t think they are which would really be a hassle. So really I’m still up in the air, I could be swayed to go anywhere really I just need to look into it some more.

I have been an instructor at MMAC for several years. In-person class dates can start on any business day of the week to line up with lab dates, previous class graduation/completion dates and so on. Additionally, if you are slated for enroute or tower will influence the length of your training as well as start/stop dates. Best advice, take it all seriously, study hard, form study groups and if you are not able to live in the FAA recommended housing, e.g., Kim's Place, Isola Bella apartments, etc.; make sure you connect with those that do and study. There are layers of information that you must memorize and conceptualize. You cannot "cram" for this, it requires daily reinforcement and effort. Also, you will make mistakes/errors. Everyone does. Quickly learn from the errors and move on with confidence you will do better each time.

I received information from my HR person that there are 3 classes in February and none of them start on the 14th so you may need to check with the person who told you the 14th. Just thought I would pass that on.

I'm going with Kims place as they use a grocery list that is part of the rent so basically I don't have to buy my own groceries unless there are a couple of things that I need that are not on the pre-made grocery list. It's also fully furnished and they provide a shuttle service to and from the academy.

I got a phone call and not an email so it’s very possible I just misheard, once I get the email it’ll all get clarified so I’m not too concerned right now. Thanks for the heads up though.

I'm not in this class but Anatole is furnished if you go through one of the housing companies. If you go through Anatole directly, they're not furnished.

I believe they're furnished just going by the pictures....

Oh that’s good to know, that basically settles that for me. I’ll most likely end up there then.
I am staying at Anatole now. They are furnished and have pretty much everything you'd need to stay here for the 2-3 months you're in OKC. I've been happy with the apartment, it's clean and comfortable and less than 10 minutes from the academy. It's also a quick drive to downtown OKC and pretty much anything else you could need is right up the road.

w youw we sees

What company did you go through to reserve your spot?

I wouldn’t study anything prior to basics. Focus on one thing at a time. Things at the academy have changed within the last two months and any sort of studying of old material could be outdated even as of 4-6 months ago. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

Things to study before basics:
  • Phonetic alphabet (know this inside-out and backwards)
  • Maaaaybe TAF/METAR format so you sound smart when you get to your facility
Things not to study before basics:
  • Everything else
