The woeful unpreparedness of Management

It’s interesting to note we aren’t getting any reports of major ATC facility closures in Europe, or Asia, even from countries that have full bore infections going on. Maybe they are actually taking it seriously, like it should be?

Anyone know of anything in Europe or Asia?

When Spain went into a national lockdown over a week ago, they cut ATC staffing. At that time, Spain had 5000 cases. For perspective, NYC alone has 5000 cases now.

But they didn’t go ATC 0 out of the blue for an infection in the facility, reductions Bc reduced staff for less chance of virus transmission is different

Yes. Reducing staffing early was the right thing to do. I don't know if any Spanish controllers have gotten the virus so I don't know what their response to that was/would be.

From the new NATCA update:

"It seems as though we eventually get the FAA and other decision-makers to where they need to be, even though it is always much slower than we would like. In our update yesterday, we shared that the FAA finally allowed facilities to draw down personnel to only those needed for the operation. And, the day before that, we advised that the FAA suspended the national training initiative with local leadership having the ability to address what training should occur in their facility with safe physical distancing in mind. Unfortunately, in places where training has ceased, break rooms are overcrowded. We have and will continue to advocate on a number of other issues, including reduced staffing (yesterday air traffic was down 10% and today 20%) and outside the box thinking on how service is provided. To date, the FAA has not been willing to consider the idea of reducing service and instituting traffic management initiatives. "

I shall state the obvious here, they want to stand before the media and say everything is running normally without issue. Also that they (not controllers) are working diligently to guarantee the safe, orderly, expeditious flow of Air Traffic and the system is unbreakable no matter the crisis , even at the risk of our (but not their) personal health (as they sit at home sipping scotch and telling the yes men to deny all leave short of testing positive for COVID). Someone give N90 a call...

Ive heard anecdotally from 2 separate RVPs that the agency is fighting NATCA on literally EVERYTHING. Every update we got this week was the product of hours of behind the scenes lobbying and escalating issues to the highest level. Legistlative contacts etc. They didn't even want to close MDW until their hand was forced, which set the table for LAS, JFK, ZID, etc. They are losing, but it shows how much they love power and hate controllers. They have major contempt for "overpaid" entitled NATCA represented line controllers. In a sick twisted way im glad that all the younger controllers have got a real firsthand view of it, instead of hearing about the "white book" but not actually understanding how bad it was.

Its also pretty obvious that some of the posters on here are mgmt.

THIS. I’ve heard the stories and seen some shit here and there but this is ridiculous. This is such an eye opener on the way they’re choosing to not do anything to reduce risk. It sounds dramatic but lives are literally at risk.

Facilities are going to help them make their decisions for them.

Management and RVP insisted we did not have close enough contact with the Tech Ops guy that tested positive, even though we share a kitchen ad bathrooms. I got a Doctor's note that said I should quarantine for 2 weeks. Was told that was not enough to convince the powers that be, that the letter had to be from a "Public Health Official." So I did some legwork and was more than happy to send my RVP a letter from the NYC Department of Health official who has slightly more medical experience who concurred and insisted a 2 week quarantine starting as of yesterday. See you in 2 weeks!

I know a couple immuno compromised people who got the 2 weeks in other states by contacting the state health officials and getting a letter to Give the ATM. Are your coworkers doing this as well? They should!
My ATM denied my admin leave, pending consultation with the regional leadership. There are at least 10 others in the tower who are working on getting the letter from the official, who advised they would be happy for me to share their information with my coworkers.

How have you guys been getting ahold of state health officials? I’ve been trying but they’re swamped. Same boat for me. Immunocompromised with a doctor note, admin/excused denied.

Likewise, trying to get ahold of my City as well.

I’ve been quarantined by the flight surgeon and my admin leave was denied. I asked why I wasn’t assigned article 45 duties when I was DQd (on an RDO) after I had asked for them in advance and the Regional President said there weren’t any available because I was sick.

So here I sit. On quarantine. Awaiting test results. Burning sick leave for the foreseeable future. Not allowed on site per the flight surgeon. And denied admin leave.
