The woeful unpreparedness of Management

My letter to quarantine from the Public Health Official in the NYC Dept of Health was denied today. Word is that the guidance came down from the region, or at least somewhere above my ATM. They are saying the letter is fake because it can be found online so we are making it up. I forwarded the email correspondence I had with the NYC DoH doctor to my ATM and NEA and am awaiting word on whether they will find something in that to shoot down as well.

FAA said they will approve excused leave for those who tested positive, because they figured none of us could get tested unless we were on our deathbed anyway. Then they said "Ok we'll also approve excused leave if you get a letter from a public health official." They didn't think it could be done, then called bullshit when I called their bluff. NATCA says "just stay home and use your sick leave, we'll try to get your leave back later." Except if I hand them everything they need to get me my excused leave NOW and they can't do it, why the hell would I trust them to get me the leave back LATER?

Asinine. Just, asinine. Keep going to work, everything is fine, we'll cross the 25% of your facility dying bridge when we get there. No biggie. You're a big strong healthy man, go do your duty from the NAS. Oh, you infected grandma and she died? Meh, not my problem, your grandma isnt a controller.

Guess I'll keep taking the subway to work!

Not once in my career have I heard the old "comply now grieve later" or the like and actually had it work out in my favor.

Un fucking believable. You’re right. They didn’t think it could be done and you’ve called their bluff. I’m still trying to get a letter from whatever the hell they think is a “public health official” but now apparently that’s not even good enough. Blood-boiling

Isn’t that like the best possible outcome if you got sentenced ZNY at the academy?
Damn imagine being a trainee fresh out of the academy and your first week at the facility you bring in the beer virus and knock out the entire ZNY facility. That is peak government potential right there. You are now the most infamous trainee in ZNY history your first week and you probably haven't even finished drawing your airway map yet. Now you get the distinct pleasure of being in the FAA for 25 years as the guy who shut down ZNY.

It’s even sadder because he probably just started drawing maps and has been there since 2012

all of these facilities should be in quarantine for 2 weeks. If they really cared about "flattening the curve". After reading this.... how the F are we ALL not going to get it?

FAA says 11 air traffic facilities affected by coronavirus outbreak

ZNY, JFK, LGA, FRG, JYO, PIA, ILG, LAS, ZID, MDW. (they only name 10)

“Like much of the country, the Federal Aviation Administration is experiencing an increase in COVID-19 cases at air traffic facilities and other offices across the nation,” the agency said in a statement. “Despite the challenges, our commitment to safety will not waver.

“Each disruption has a distinct impact on the air traffic system,” the agency said. “This is frustrating and inconvenient, but is necessary in the interest of safety.”

“We are restocking cleaning supplies at air traffic facilities where they are running low,” the FAA said in a statement. “As an interim measure, the agency has authorized managers to purchase cleaning products at local stores if needed to sanitize workspaces. We are not requiring employees to bring supplies from home, although some employees are doing so voluntarily.”

FAA administrator Steve Dickson is under self-quarantine (but Phillyman2633 is not allowed) after having a “brief interaction” with Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), who has tested positive, before a House hearing earlier this month.

"In extreme cases, service levels could vary, but safety will not be compromised", the agency said.

The FAA said its Air Traffic Organization "is asking our facilities to make local purchases for cleaners, wipes, and hand sanitizer where possible" and "the Agency is supplementing supplies from our Logistics Center as best we can".

New trainee duty.... go shop for supplies to make the operation safe! They're admitting there is rampant Covid-19 at ATC facilities, AND that they don't have the capacity to even provide the most basic supplies to keep employees safe. They did not acknowledge that ALL social distancing occurring within ATC is a result of hours and hours of begging and pleading and scratching and clawing by NATCA. IT is "frustrating and inconvenient" that controllers are getting sick. HAZARD PAY NOW

Our commitment to safety has and never will waver, what is pissing us off is the lack of common sense and genuine concern for us by the scotch drinkers sitting at home calling the shots, not unlike the generals in WW1 chilling 35 miles behind the front throwing a dinner party while mass frontal attacks are being gunned down by a horde of Maxim 1908’s...

All of Congress reads the Amazon Washington Post. We are on our own! Each person must have the courage to do what's right for their own family. If you're really asking for 2 week quarantine in good faith, then you must stay home for 2 weeks whether ot costs you personally or not. Small price to pay.

While I agree that you should stay home, their botched response and fighting NATCA and lack of cleaning and sanitation plans and supplies needs to be called out. I’m sure the Washington Post would love to hear Phillyman2633 story among others

So far Air Traffic Controllers are literally the only class of people that I've heard that can get exposed to sick people and NOT self quarantine. The fucking FAA Administrator is doing it!!! Why are we tanking our economy if this whole thing is a charade? We are stuck on stupid.

P.s. my fat Chinese kid avatar died of Covid. Had several comorbidities. RIP

My gut (strictly my gut no rumours) tell me there is something much bigger at play here. The Agency wants to be able to say the system never shut for a few (my own speculative) reasons:
-That we (not Management or the Union) can keep the system going no matter what and never will compromise the safety of the NAS regardless of the Global Situation
-Jobs, specifically theirs, are at risk of incurring the incumbents wrath
-The current situation shows no matter how much the Union "collaborates" "builds relationships" is extremely limited in its influence. The intentions of the Union during this situation while honourable and sincere, show that they as well, are expendable and when push comes to shove cannot influence this tide.
-Shutting down or limiting movement within the system (ie... Medvacs, Cargo, Military only) will open the flood gates for (to steal a line) "Unforeseen Consequences" up to and not limiting a pathway to find people that will do as instructed by the government.

Existential factors such as the economy, politics, and other things (which might explain how the Union is handling this) have have very stark parallels to other moments in history...

We all know that they are postponing the inevitable, how this plays out will be interesting.
