FAA to DOD Question

Does anyone know how long it would take to transfer from the FAA to the DOD after getting selected for a job? Does NCEPT factor into this at all? Can the FAA stop you from transferring agencies? Also, has anyone here resigned and then taken a contract tower job and returned to the FAA at a later date? If so how did the process go? I am looking at other options since it looks like I won't be certified in my facility anytime soon.

After getting selected, you talk to DoD HR and decide your start date. It can be as early as the following pay period. FAA (agency nor management to include NATCA and NCEPT) have no say in when you go. You can be nice and give your manager a heads up or just dip. It’s a transfer between two agencies under OPM, everything transfers (leave, FERS, benefits, etc). One pay period you work for FAA, next you’re getting paid by DoD. You will keep your pay (and most likely get a pay raise) as long as it falls between the offered GS payband. If you’re looking at GS pay bands, make sure you look at the SSR tables for 2152. DoD has better schedule flexibility and you’ll most likely get holidays and weekends off (can vary by facility).

Thanks for the reply!

I recommend to everyone to get fully checked out before you try to go DOD. I received a TOL when I was D3 and offered a step 5. I checked out prior to getting my FOL and my CPC salary bumped me up to a step 10. It takes a long time to reach the higher steps if you are a step 1.

Plus once you are cpc you can always apply for reinstatement without waiting for a bid. If you can I would recommend dealing with it until you can get checked out. Good luck!

how does relocation work? Do you get travel days if you’re moving cross country or would you have to take regular leave?
There is no relocation policy when you transfer from FAA to DoD. If you’re lucky to have Sat as one of your RDOs, then start DoD on Sunday, but not have to come in until Monday. Maybe try to put in leave with the FAA prior to and hope it gets approved? no 8 days of admin/relocation/travel days either if that’s what you’re asking.
