As Controllers we have the tendency to become complacent, more so when we have nothing to complain about or when the status quo is acceptable to us. Activism is the most important piece of the puzzle in deciding the future of our Union. Every person should encourage their brothers and sisters to become informed and vote regardless of their choice in candidate. To truly have a National Executive Board represent us, we must have the élan to push voter turn out to something not yet seen or recorded since NATCA members voted for their first contract.

As NATCA members our duty is:

- To motivate our facilities to become informed about upcoming elections
- Encourage people in our facilities to voice their opinions and have open discussions about issues
- Help them understand why it is important to their future and that of our profession
- Help them grasp the concept that if they were not happy with the choices made in the past, they too have a voice and their vote is important

These four points at the very least should encourage people to ask questions and motivate them to do further research. If they want a candidate to come to their facility and explain their postions or why they have a stance different than incumbents on any issue, reach out to the candidate! Inviting a candidate to the facility, volunteering or even donating to their campaign can make all the difference in the world. Fear, self-doubt, and resistance to change can hinder anyone. But there's always something you can do, no matter how small the action.

Regardless of who you choose to vote for, the most important thing is Activism.

We are all here because we want to serve our brothers and sisters, and each individual should be given a constant opportunity to do that in the ways that will best benefit the Union as a whole.— Peter Holter-Mehren, WAPWU President (2002)
