No speculating, just talking in general terms. It’s simple don’t staff the break room when you can open up positions.

Your paid to work, not to be on break 5 hours a shift!
Since you appear to be acting as management, you know what else sucks? Training for over 5 hours a shift! At that point, I'm NOT actually working traffic, I'm being a mind reader trying to figure what that person is doing and what they are going to do next. How am I supposed to keep my own skills sharp during peak traffic volumes when you call me every RDO for OT?

Share that with whoever you're stroking for your next promotion that avoids traffic.

I don't think anyone gets 5 hours of breaks. We do and should staff to the positions according to the need. Fresh eyes are best for busy traffic, not glazed over tired eyes. There is a reason we have the 2 hour rule.

Fix the god damn staffing imbalances. Or at least start compensating different areas of a building differently.

At our area of the Z, which happens to be the busiest and worst-staffed, I can't remember the last time I went below 5 hours on position on the occasional 8-hour shift. And that's a baseline minimum, we're usually well over that with little downtime due to the structure of the airspace.

While the glue sniffers working tinker toy traffic on the other side of the building spend more time in the break room than on position and can pretty much avoid all the OT they want because of their staffing is thicc and juicy. They also have periods of time during the day where traffic is dead and they can zone out for a bit while on position.

I really like the way places like C90, A80 are set up where if you're going to get level 12 pay, you need to check out on the most difficult position in the building.

The article to switch areas in a center is a joke and needs to be fixed. Then they need to rebalance the center when needed. The way the current article is written you will likely lose money if you volunteer. Also you shoukd be allowed to get certified in extra sectors for an increase in pay.

Lose money? What are you talking about.

I always liked the idea of being able to be a "utility" controller. Like get half the room in 3 areas so you work where needed and have 2 per crew or something. I think you could do it within local SOP's but haven't thought about it that hard.

Just going to stop by to slightly back off my earlier critique of Nick. Looks like he's actually making the rounds. How good he is/will be can be debated ad nauseum, but for a minute there I thought he was going to be a complete flake/dingus and only go on FB live.

So I was wrong, there.
I'm sure his phone was blowing up.

We have the breaks we do because of the demanding job dumdum

Sure we are allotted breaks and one 30 minute lunch. But how much break time do we really get? 15 minutes is the minimum I believe but we all know that isn't how it really works.

Lets look at those breaks on the road too that we're on the clock for. If you want to demand things then be honest and expect it to come to light. People on here don't like how negotiations work. It isn't just one side getting everything.

There are facilities which allow cross-training into other positions after certifying. From what I last read, something like 1/3 of C90 is certified in all 3 "areas" of the building (you only need 2 to check out) and it makes a massive difference in keeping the operation balanced. I don't even think they offer a financial incentive to cross-train.

I have a supe that says “you’re only entitled to one 30 minute break. If I want, I can give out 5 minute breaks”
I litterally LOL’d

Yeah the contract doesn't spell out times other than the 30 minute lunch (I could be wrong and missed it). Some places are way worst than others with the rotations.

Oh and that 30 minute lunch is included in our shift unlike most jobs where the lunch is unpaid.

You aren’t even entitled your lunch break. If you don’t get a break they just have to pay you a missed meal which is only 15 minutes of pay.

It takes a minute to set up some of these TV spots.
