Don’t know if it’s like this in other places, but I know the majority (not all, but definitely the majority) of NATCA reps at my facility are people who either hate or are afraid of working traffic, and their main goal is to climb the union ladder. We have at least a half dozen “controllers” who sit in an office M-F 0700-1300 on “NATCA detail.” All as we’re critically short staffed. The whole thing is a scam.

Best part is when they still bid a schedule and leave with you, they're the most senior guys and take weekends off despite being on the detail

Several of the NATCA detail people at our facility don’t even maintain currency. They get every weekend and every holiday off and are making CPC pay and some of them haven’t even spoken to an aircraft in years and aren’t even currently certified to work a single sector.

Honestly I think it's just in poor taste. It's different but in the same vein as when one of the Kardashians (maybe not a Kardashian,I don't give a shit about celebrity garbage) started a go fund me for her hair or makeup girl who needed some life saving medical procedure not that long ago. Sure you can say it's voluntary, and they didn't start the go fund me, but I'm sure they have been made aware of it.

If they turn around and donate it to charity or use the funds to do something that benefits the union I'll be pleasantly surprised and okay with it, but like it just got mentioned, they've made millions off of our dues over the last decade plus. This ain't like passing a hat around the tracon to buy jimbo a nice fly fishing rig for retirement.
