PC builds

Just ended up buying a 1TB NVME Gen 3 on sale at Best Buy for $90 (WD Blue). Add in a $20 external case from Amazon and I have a blazing fast external hard drive that's about $50 cheaper than getting a WD one on sale. But we're finally reaching the point where 1TB M.2 NVME is fully on point with SSD outside of the premium versions of the big names. Good news for those of us that like to build our own PCs.

Nice build! I feel like more of us should be posting pics on here of our builds to both compliment each other on our builds as well as sh*t-talk each other for things like cable management and desk setup and what not.

What case did you go with, what speed is your RAM, why only 1080p monitors, and why the 3070 instead of the 3080? Unless it is an availability issue for the 3080 it seems like sinking that much money into the build would lend itself to the 3080 to ensure high fps at 1440p instead of making the GPU the bottleneck with the 3070.

What CPUs are y'all using with those beasts? Any bottlenecking that you're aware of?
Sorry, just got back on today to see your reply.

I went with the 3070 for 2 reasons, availability being the biggest, and cost. I may end up upgrading later but I've never built a PC spending more than $300 on the GPU, so this was definitely an adjustment for me.

I went a little more old school, with the Rosewill Thor V2 in black. I wanted a mostly black build, as I like the aesthetic of it. I have 3200MHz RAM and adjusted the MB to use it that way instead of stock at 2400, and have had no issues. I couldn't justify spending money on super expensive monitors, and the 1080p is all I need for now. I'm a student, pursuing ATC as my career, getting a degree in Aviation Administration and and minor with ATC (CTI). When I get into ATC, if ever it seems now with COVID, then I can justify spending more.

Cable management wasn't the best because of the case, but I'll post pics tomorrow night, if I remember haha. But would definitely not recommend the case for OCD cable management people lol

That Thor case is the prettiest-ugly case I have ever seen. ? Definitely looks better in black than in white.

I honestly can't believe they sold white ? the case I really wanted hasn't been made for years, the Xigmatek Elysium, a server case. I can't find it anywhere, including eBay.

Here's the photos I snagged of inside my case.

The 3 color wire from the bottom fan should tell you that I ordered that extra to help airflow in the case. I had no where else to put it. Thinking about taking a sharpie to the wire or something to help it blend.

I mean, the case side has mesh with an intake fan and doesn't have a window right?

I don't think you need to be worried about the aesthetic of cable color inside if you can't actively look at it. I knew my build would be right next to my monitor and I knew I would stare at my build from time to time for little moments of Zen, so I tried to cable manage and organize it as pleasing as possible.

But if you aren't looking at it all the time, who cares about the yellow bomb-wire being visible? I suppose if you have enough fan cable length you could try to tuck it along the front edge of the fan and then make a 90 degree turn and run straight up on the other side for a touch more aesthetic/cable management but I wouldn't worry about taking a Sharpie to it ?

How the hell do I make this thread show up again? Or can I not do that
Ever since they changed the homepage layout however many weeks back I make it a point to just immediately click on the "latest posts" link. Homepage is now officially fake news and cannot be trusted.

He needs to get a fake C4 brick, cut a hole in it for the fan and slip the fan in the brick

I'm unable to find a fake brick online that would fit a 120mm fan and still sit in front of the power supply comfortably, so I'm thinking about making my own. Any ideas?

It depends on what look you are going for, how much you want to spend and how much effort you want to put into it. If it was me I would find a 3d model that I liked, scale it to fit/cut a hole in it on solidworks. Pay to have it 3d printed and then paint it once its at my place. I think something that size would only be 30-40$ to do it and it would look pretty sweet.

I can't argue with that. I honestly hadn't even thought about the 3d printing route. Seeing as you typed that up, you wouldn't have any recommendations off hand, would you?

My 3d printing knowledge comes from the gun world, so take that in consideration. The ender 3 is good for most people who want a basic 3d printer, resin printers are better for detailed work but aren't suitable for "freedom" printing. If you were into warhammer or minitures then resin is the way to go. Also if you sign up for EAA(Experimental Aircraft Association) you can get a free solid works subscription, or there are other ways to get it for free if you are familiar with the internet or free alternatives. You might be able to contact someone on etsy/online and have them adjust the print design for you if your not interested in messing with it.

Looks like I've got some lessons to take. I'm probably gonna hit up an Etsy/other online shop since I don't currently own a 3D printer.

Speaking of EAA, do you believe it's worth it? You're the first person I've seen mention it....I've considered it but wanted a first hand review

All the gun guys swear its worth it, I found a version on a "website" that was free but an older version, I'm going to sign up for it here in a couple of months once I get tired of my wonky version. A good youtube series to watch if you want to start -

Once you start its hard to stop, you will be 3d printing all sorts of "fixes" for stuff around the house. You can find a community for just about anything 3d printing these days

That's what I'm finding. I'm already a member of a local group on facebook for 3D printing xD
