What's the deal with ERR vs. hardships?

If you have a legitimate case for a hardship then you’re certification status is irrelevant. If I’m the primary caretaker for my mom who has a life threatening illness I wouldn’t give two shits about my reputation in the facility. Period.
Earlier, someone said the hardship is likely to be denied if you know about it prior to taking the job and likely to be approved if it happens after taking the job.

Is that true?

It’s certainly possible someone would question the legitimacy of your case. If you knew about your mothers Illness prior to taking the job then filed a hardship after going to an undesirable facility knowing you couldn’t be your mothers caretaker there, then yes it’s a possibility. I’m not pretending to be an expert though because I’m not.

Why take the job if you really need to be by your sick mother? Even going to OKC for initial training at the academy sounds like a tough decision if you're the only care taker. The hardship will probably get denied if you came into the job with your mom's preexisting condition.

So it’s generally always better/more secure to certify first, hardship later, right?
There is no guarantee a hardship will be approved. If you show up as a new trainee, immediately file a hardship and then it’s denied, you’re going to be blacklisted. Then basically your only option at that point will be to quit.

Hardships are not guaranteed. Period.

The academy is ~3-5 months away from your family providing you don’t already live around OKC. I certainly wouldn’t put it past them to ask what happened to make the situation change and request proof.

I don’t know if saying hardship transfers are “usually approved” is quite accurate anymore. I think the agency is starting to catch on to people trying to game the system. I know of several people who submitted what seemed to pretty legit hardships recently that were denied.
I think hardships are approved at the regional level so it might depend where you are.

This guy has real “tells management you signed out and left 5 minutes before your end time” potential.
Hey sup I saw CF leave 12 minutes early. That’s cool right?

Pretty sure both regions have to review it but your current region is the one who actually determines if it’s legit.

edit: both meaning where you are now and where you want to go.

I’m not entirely sure what to make of this thread. I don’t know if it meets the criteria to be under the “NCEPT” section of the forums.

Nonetheless, given what I’ve skimmed through, if you end-goal is to make it to the Central Florida area, you’re gonna need a miracle and a half to get there in the future. MCO, F11, ORL, and SFB are all beyond staffed, both current and projected. And hardships only allow movement up 3 facility levels. So if you somehow get hired and make it through OKC, only to be sent to a level 4/5, your options become extremely limited.

There are plenty of different threads about both the NCEPT process and hardships. Google the current NATCA contract and read up on Article 99. That lays out the process for hardships.

this person hasn’t even taken the at sa

This thread ALMOST reminds me of this one.

I mean your applying for a job that says you have to move everywhere and your already planning out your hardship. It’s kind of a federal offense
Sure thing, bro.

By your own logic a while earlier, I can’t “plan” anything if I haven’t even applied yet.

So make up your mind; which is it?

If you have nothing to contribute to my question, then get off my ass and keep it moving, sir.

OP, I've been lurking here for 2 years now, and only started posting once I got my TOL. I dont know what ATCs are like in person, but I quickly figured out what they are like here: even with Poe's Law in full-effect, you can tell that they're ribbing each other in the extreme. For the most part I think that's the best way to have a work environment because it diffuses the tension of the job. I worked for my sheriff's office for a time and it was exactly the same. The other part of this is the age old "lurk more" piece of advice that's key for online forums.

That being said your post was made with due diligence and it's a question I was curious about too. I just decided not to put the cart before the horse. Good luck with your Starbucks Degree, or something. Hopefully a bid does open up for you in the next year.

They are like this in real life too

The one thing I'm gonna add in here is in the event you get hired and pass the academy, get assigned across the country from where you want to be, at a hard to staff facility in bumfuck, definitely tell everyone day one when you step in the door that you plan on hardshipping out in front of all the people who will be training you who have been stuck there for years trying to leave.

They'll appreciate the honesty, and do everything they can to assist you in getting home as soon as possible.
