FSS jobs in Alaska

It is unfortunate. So basically with FSS you put your time in and be done in 20 years minimum (doing the same thing for years) or try to look for other opportunities elsewhere (in the FAA or government) once you have some time build (if you went the FSS route) but actual terminal or enroute are not an option (including staff or sup positions).
The way it stands now, yeah. But in 2008(i think) FSS was federal nationwide. Contract went to lockheed, then leidos, and now its looking like it might not get renewed. the three main AK FSS hubs are preparing to take control of ALL the airport NOTAMS for the lower 48.

And once upon a time, EVERYONE was getting shafted under the white book. The CTI program used to be worth something, then nothing, then kinda something. The air traffic standard test used to be on paper, then it was the ATSAT, now its the ATSA.

Nothing stays the same for very long, in the FAA....except our hilariously antiquated equipment.

Good news for FSS trainees going to HUB facilities (FAI, ENA, and JNU). The agency is splitting the the flight data position(the first one you train on) into two separate positions. Flight Data and NOTAMs, which means you will get that lovely pay bump, quicker.

Could someone clarify how the scheduling works for the FSS facilities?

I keep hearing that some spots are "on the road" and others aren't. If I'm gathering this correctly, JNU, FAI, and ENA have staff that stay there year round, while the other facilities rotate people every couple of weeks. So you're essentially "on the road"?

Just curious how this all works! Thanks!

some locations are seasonal. While they are closed, you would work at the hub station. Some stations, you rotate out to from the hub station. scheduling is different at each location. JNU might be mostly 4 10s, while ENA might be on 8-on, 6-off. It all depends on what the local management and natca agree to. After the academy, during the roughly 6ish months of training, you'll get a better idea of how it works and how to get on a rotation.

How much do preferences for location on the bid actually factor into what location you’ll get in the TOL?
Very little. What's your prefs?

Fairbanks and Juneau were #1 and 2
I know FAI just got a boat load of trainees a few months ago, not sure what their total numbers are like though. I know JNU is pretty short. You might get JNU. how far are you into the application process?

Thanks for the info! I just received my ATSAT results (BQ pool 1).

I should’ve clarified. It was for the ATC bid. I’m only assuming it will transfer to this bid since they both opened within a short timeframe of each other?
It's good for 3 years, and it will transfer, mine did. You can either ignore the invite to test for the flight service job, or you can role the dice and try again.

Did you get Best qualified, Well qualified, or Qualified?
