FAM Flight Status

Dude the Agency is using the whole covid thing to kill this off once and for all. You honestly think they were planning to bring it back? yea ok...
This is true but it sucks it’s not on the NATCA radar at all either. If your at a small facility and used FDT to replace pricy flights, losing this benefit is almost equivalent to losing a couple years of the 1.6% raise.

Did something change?
The main change is the changes to make sure it works on the platform. But there are new website links and other admin stuff that needs to change.

Pricy flights for weekend? geez.
Wait till you find out FAA inspectors have like unlimited access to cass
Well that is their job…..soooooo

There job isn’t to fly to Myrtle beach every weekend

It already went away and came back once. No reason to think it won’t again. Plus it’s training, so it does benefit the agency.
There was no reason for it to go away. Simply could have been like no FAM for Covid. Then after they could have just be like ok it’s allowed again

Another month, still nothing. I think its probably past 3 years now of officially being "paused" for COVID. Beyond absurd

This program is such a huge learning tool and I see a lot of our trainees and newer CPCs issuing instructions with no awareness of what's going on in the cockpit. It needs to be brought back.

Not sure of the practicality, but I wouldn't mind it being mandatory once per year. Anyone who has done it knows how beneficial it is.

My rep told me they're definitely bringing it back some time this year, and that they're just working on software upgrades.

Not sure if this has been posted but I was looking at the site for it this evening and noticed this:

Future of the Flight Deck Training Program

Though pilots and controllers alike find value in the training provided by the FDT program, the FAA is operating based on informed, risk-based decisions. Staffing shortages in all areas of the aviation industry are causing significant strain on the NAS. The FAA does not want to contribute potential problems to an already strained system. When weighing the risks to the NAS versus the rewards gained from the training, the risks are still significant enough that the FAA and our industry partners are taking a cautious approach going forward.

Flight Deck Training Automated System (FDTAS)

FDTAS is the software solution which allowed for scheduling Flight Deck Training events by eligible Air Traffic employees. Since March 2020, the Flight Deck Training program itself has been suspended due to the impacts of COVID-19

FDTAS was developed in collaboration with airline partners to access CASS. FDTAS itself has been identified as having software security vulnerabilities which require it to be deactivated and removed from the Agency’s mission support network. The FAA deactivated FDTAS on February 24th, 2023. Updating these systems will require significant coordination and efforts by not only multiple LOB’s and servicing units, but also external industry partners.

The deactivation of the FDTAS software tool does not itself represent the termination of the Flight Deck Training program.
