Pretty much the only variables that consistently matter for ATC are high school diploma, IFR rated pilot, and age. I've been having trouble finding it lately, but there is a more recent study (2000's) that says all this and also shows that Cti degrees have no impact.

Haven’t seen that study. Curious about the “age” part. Does it, in any way, lend support to mandating a maximum age entry like federal ATC jobs have?

People like to blame the new wave of controllers. Which could be true. I blame the older controllers. Most of the 50+ have no desire to teach. They rather shit on developmentals and newer CPCs and keep the wealth of information they have to themselves. I've only met one that actually wanted to train people.

There was always a big split among the cti schools. The difference between the top end and the low end was crazy. There was a proposed plan of giving priority to the top cti schools cus they had known those schools did much better. There is also an effect on your screening test if the entire pool scored better. They still hire the top however many people.

I’ve seen plenty of “Teach by Ridicule” controllers in my career. Being good at doing a job doesn’t make one good at teaching others how to do it.

I'm betting anyone with a college degree in 1976 has a lot more job opportunities that paid the same or better than a non college applicants. So of course they would be more likely to self eliminate.

That study tells us nothing.

That said, I don't think college matters at all for this job. I think a good CTI school could set you up for success but so does the Navy/AF in some ways.

In all fairness, studies about it show that having a high school diploma increases chances of checking out. Anything past that has no effect.

Anecdotally in my experience, anything past a high school diploma can hurt you lol. I have seen several folks in training in my career that had a bachelors degree in ATC management, among other things. And coincidentally every single one of them are among the absolute worst performers I have ever seen take a crack at live ATC training lol.

I attest to this. I had a Marine with a college degree be ATC. Yes I know, why not be officer? I don’t fucken know. But he was older than me. Washed. I’ll always say, ATC is about street smart, not book smart.

You're incorrect. The last version of the bill to privatize ATC (supported by NATCA by the way) included language that prevented ATC from striking.
