Serious Not respecting congressman

Agency has sunk to a new low. We had a Republican congressman come to visit the facility. I was on break in the recliner watching YouTube on some democratic people running.

ATM tried to punish me for not showing respect when they walked in and watching the opposite party's videos. I laughed at them and walked out. NATCA rep said there is no rule saying you have to show respect or can't listen to what you want on breaks.

Leadership is so toxic.

What punishment did they try?
First was a verbal reprimand. I asked repremand for what? They had no answer.

Just more shocking that I'm not allowed free speech.

Literally no where in the contract does it say I have to show respect for any visitor.

NATCA rep is useless here, having to go to the next level.

At work, you don't have free speech.

True, but in OP’s scenario, he didn’t say anything. Sounds like the ATM & Republican douchebag congressman were butthurt about a lack of action (failure to acknowledge the presence of that douchebag and kiss his ass). I don’t see how not acknowledging the presence of a visitor is worthy of any punishment.

Agreed. It's possible that some involved viewed the OPs activity in the break room as engaging in partisan political activities at work.

Would it not be a more aggregious partisan political activity to punish an employee for watching a tv channel on break based purely on a visitor/the atm's political leanings more so than simply having a tv on? Seems like a legit EEO claim to me.

Its not like he was outside with a sign that said FUCK YOU SENATOR XXXXXXX he was watching tv.

how did you have a congressman come to the facility? we were yelled at that "national order, absolutely no tours during the shutdown, including congress."

Definitely not a national order, it’s region by region. We’re allowing tours at my facility but I went on vacation a few months ago and was denied a tour where I traveled to.
