How soon before AI & automation replace ARTCC controller functions?

The Center environment seems particularly ripe for automation, as enroute flight is more conducive to minor tweaks in mach number, heading, ride reports, Winds aloft, Weather, in trail restrictions, Meter times, reduced separation minima, etc etc etc. this could all be done via some sort of text message system that also eliminated language barriers, stuck mics (RIP website), bad readbacks, etc.

This would presumably also save the government billions of dollars a year. There would be monitors who could take over or override if needed. Not shitty TMU controllers or weakass mealy-mouthed sups, but real controllers. The savings could go towards MORE OT and CIP pay for the real controllers. #GreatCIPMysterySolved

Elon Musk could probably easily come up with such a program while smoking the best weed and drinking world class scotch.

This will probably happen in our lifetime. Its only gonna keep getting busier and busier. Busier even than the mythical "Pre 9/11 traffic" that our ATC forefathers talk about everyday. #ItusedToBeBusy

Men have been put on the moon. Polio was cured (too late for FDR). Magic Johnson is AIDSless, yet ARTCC traffic count eludes us. This could also double as an effective way to finally figure out the unsolvable quagmire known as ARTCC traffic count, and enable a fair facility pay level to be reached for all. WIN!

How long before this starts mission creeping into the career field? It is inevitable. We may be living in a simulation as it is.

I have an idea for tracons / radar in general I guess... I'd prefer not to say it because I think it's a pretty good idea but I doubt I'd ever have the capital to invent it let alone get the faa to buy it.

You wanna go on Shark tank w me? ? ? ?

Lol! Our pitch... "gubmit pockets are deep! We could easily develop and roll out in 24 months but shit we'll stretch it out to 7 to 10 years and get PAID!"

lol Mr Wonderful will be like..... What is your sales so far? distribution? Can we get production costs down? We will sell to Damon and ban the gluttonous large wasteful scammy Tracons from it. Theyre already fat & complacent on CIP govt cheese and union scams.

I totally agree with almost all of this, I think for sure the technology exists to automate the center airspace. It would be easy for a computer to do this more effective then humans. You can still have humans on the airport and in approach controls where things happen to fast and are too complicated for AI yet. I hope it does happen and take effect in the next 15 years or so, I think it would be awesome to be part of the “last generation” of air traffic before AI took over. It would be a cool topic to write a book about in retirement. And if any of you god complex people think your too important for this to happen, just remember the shut down where you changed your Facebook profile pic and cried about being used as a “pawn” when you always considered yourself a king or queen lol.

Woodley & Mcgilvarly will make us whole in 2047. We will be receiving Publix gift cards but they wont apply to any meat better than Bologna or that shitty Salami with the spicy black things in it.

Yeah all the people who think they're CEOs but really just work for the govt were in for a rude awakening when the shutdown hit. NCEPT King Mick Devine hit such a rock bottom in his MCNBC interview he said the family MIGHT have to sell a motorcycle.

AI is inevitable. I will write the FWD to your book brother .

After it happens are you gonna start a thread about the great ZNY universal basic income scam and complain how you still have to work?

I mean, how much of the center environment relies on actual human input that couldn't be replaced?
Almost none at this point, even why you call TMU they just look on their computer and do what it tells them to do. Basically all oceanic stuff is run by computers now too. That could be replaced tomorrow and AI could issue the crossing altitudes, Mach number adjustments, S turns for miles in trial, etc.....

Well we rarely call TMU, IDAC for the win and most the time it's on auto lmao...so yeah...looks like I found a side project to kill time.

We have a controller that transferred from a center that worked a oceanic sector to a up down. I've seen them ask what color runway lights are after 10+ years in the agency and supposed military time.

Between knowing that said person was certified at that center, plus a supe according to them for a period of time, then getting an extention on ground here..... What I saw on local and other questions asked..... I would whole hardly believe that a monkey/ 10 year old/ mentality challenged could work an oceanic sector in an ARTCC.

Ive lost all faith in flying because of this person yet I still book trips. I just avoid their shifts.

Why would a center controller be concerned about the color of runway lights? Very different jobs, but no need to condescend (that means talk down to, btw). I have worked both high level terminal and center, and I can say without a doubt that the most challenging environment has been a center on a busy SWAP night in the northeast. Much more of a cognitive game for sure.

How dumb do you have to be to discuss how your cushy 6 figure job which is already half automated could be fully automated. The American dream is to make the most money doing as little work as possible. Not one of y’all gonna defend why you’re needed? Hello!!! The argument isn’t whether it can be automated, it’s what bullshit we can sling to the government to prevent full automation. Luckily we are dealing with the govt so implementation will take years.
