Hiring Bid FAA-ATO-23-ATCEXP-82723 (Prior Experience)

Well gents, I won't be getting a facility preference list. I was offered a direct hire to FAI, which is exactly what I wanted (shocking, I know--but I'm already in the area.)

Good luck to the rest of you all! Maybe one or two more will pick/be given FAI 🙂 Don't be scared of the weather--it *legitimately* is something you get used to. Nobody is really outside for very long in the worst part of winter, anyway, except for nutjobs.
Never heard of direct hire. Does that have to do with veterans preference?

More to do with their experience being a fit somewhere that they struggle to get people to. JCF and FAI are the 2 common ones the last couple of years. Mainly JCF but they’ll offer you that facility in lieu of a list. If you decline it, they’ll get you a list at some point

I didn't put any veteran's preference into my application. I honestly don't know how much of a factor me reaching out to the ATM at the time played into me getting a direct hire.

The official answer HR will give is "we don't do direct hires." The non-official answer (as far as I understand), is that at hard-to-staff locations, regional hiring managers can have some pull when it comes to bringing people to their facility who want to be there. Whether it was the ATM talking to our regional hiring manager, or some other sort of FAA voodoo, it happened. I was stationed at Eielson prior to applying, so that could have also been a factor. Who knows, honestly. The FAA should do stuff like they did for me more often.

Friend of mine got multiple direct offers while waiting for a list, without ever reaching out to any of those ATMs. They were all bad locations though so they turned them down.

Interesting. Like I said, who knows what it was that got me the offer. It may have been pure coincidence that I was seeking FAI and got the offer directly.

Yeah a lot of people get offered specifically FAI before they get a facility list and sometimes other hard to staff facilities. Not everyone gets the offer but if you reached out saying you were interested then I'm really not surprised you got offered FAI
