Midair Collision DCA

Right, 3 of 6 positions open and 7+ on break. Explain that to the media and those families, smh.

Breaks are awesome and well deserved. Just open more positions, instead of staffing the break room,

“dumb-dumb”

Let’s hope there was only 1 on break at DCA!
I thought they said a supe had approved leave, leaving only one person in the building

Very similar situation just 24 hours before the collision. TCAS RA to avoid the helicopter, shows just how normal those helicopters are flying through the arrivals.
I wonder how many times this procedure was atsap’d or brought up by the local safety council and someone up the management side making 200k sat on it because there was too much work to change it

So you don’t know but are speculating about how the shift was being run in a public forum implying that they had positions abnormally combined? Real good work.

Yea dumdum, we're recallable on break to work as needed. That great interview that everyone is gushing over he talks about how traffic is like an accordion.

Maybe you should watch it, you might learn something.

Any number of things can happen requiring assistance from people "on break". Go sit at your dead scope with one plane as your cry to yourself about your TOP being the best.

No speculating, just talking in general terms. It’s simple don’t staff the break room when you can open up positions.

Your paid to work, not to be on break 5 hours a shift!

The public doesn’t get mad when they find out that pilots work 12 days a month. I don’t think they’d get mad that at the fact that controllers should work less too. It’s not a normal job and shouldn’t be viewed as such

I’ve also never heard of a citizen getting mad at the workload of a firefighter which is probably our closest analog. Sometimes shits busy sometimes it’s not. Fire house is full all the time.

This is what happens when shitty controllers become supervisors. Splitting open dead positions just lead to workplace distractions and weak controllers. If you work dead positions 90% of the time god help us when you don’t have any currency working busy traffic. TOP to pad allocation of resources is a detriment to the flying public when it reduces the controllers skill level over the long term. ATC doesn’t get paid for the 5 hours of dead time they get paid for the 3 hours that they run radars/grounds/locals at a pace and complexity that the NAS demands. I don’t advocate for staffing the break room but the check this box so I don’t have to think as a supervisor is horseshit.

I don't think anyone gets 5 hours of breaks. We do and should staff to the positions according to the need. Fresh eyes are best for busy traffic, not glazed over tired eyes. There is a reason we have the 2 hour rule.

We as a facility did everything we could to clear out multiple trainees, but the region said no, and keep training. Believe me, none of us wanted it. We were told you WILL train them. The ATM was even blocked from removing them and going against the TRB via a letter from the region.. That’s failure goes way above us. I’m sorry, four TRBs in, you should be done. Box 1 runway incursions, no lack of positive control, errors every session. All documented. 200 hours target number, and you drag it to 1000 and they still fail. That is the rot in the system.

This man is a gentleman and a class act. Boy we could use him. He should be hired immediately as PR for NATCA…
What region are you, if you don't mind? Don't want you to dox yourself though.
