It’s the old boomer-inspired “tHiS iS tHe GrEaTeSt JoB iN tHe WoRlD” toxic mindset that because other people in other walks of life may be worse off than you, you don’t have any right to be unhappy about the bullshit you have to deal with in your career.
Everyone in this job who's a CPC makes more than the median household income. You guys are just insanely out of touch if you think you can make similar money elsewhere. It's a bunch of people who have never worked another job saying this. You all act like it's the easiest shit to get another job to pay similar to this. Or that it's so easy to get a degree and make six figures. We deserve more, but unless you're at HCOL place while being at a level 4, you're still making more than the average person is. If you think it's hard being a controller making six figures imagine how hard it is for the person making twenty an hour working 80 hours a week.

The fact that you are even comparing ATC with jobs making 20/hr in the first place is proving the point.

I never said it was easy but it is possible if you expand your horizons. Years have been spent by me networking, educating myself, and finding other potential outs as this career has decreased. The writing was on the wall back in 08 and 14 but some people are just afraid of change.

Yes or No Question.

Should an Air Traffic Controller be able to afford a house in the community they serve?

If your answer is yes, this contract and career field is falling way way behind.

Controllers 20 years ago were comfortably upper middle class on a single ATC income. That reality is gone now. Pay needs to go up, drastically.

Agreed. Now most people (if they are lucky, minus OT and differentials) are being paid the same as a GS12/13/14. Why kill yourself for that early retirement (my MRA is 58 if I stay non-good time), work a shit schedule for 15/16 years to until a decent set of RDO's, and the rattler (or reverse rattler in this case)? Might as well be a normal person: take leave when you want, make your kids lacrosse games, etc... ? Not to mention I WFH 90% of the pay period and only go into the office once a week.

The scale is tipping drastically in the other direction.
If you’re really liking your TERPS job & the location where you live, it might be best to keep it. Hell, if you can keep the WFH 90% of the time like you currently have, why even retire as soon as you’re eligible at 58?

It is a very good possibility. Let me tell you though, 4 months of decent sleep have made me a changed man.

Is the prestige and pleasure of working the boards enough to offset the years taken off your life from inconsistent sleep schedules and missed family functions that you can never get back? Not suggesting anything, but merely asking. Some people would say yes. I hope whatever decision is made by anybody who has the luxury of the option can look back after a long career and regret nothing. For me the answer is as clear as it can get.
If you want the job prestige get just get an office job and still call yourself an air traffic controller like the A114 fucks.

I mean TECHNICALLY it is the title as a 2152.. if one is in it for the bragging/title recognition/prestige, what’s the difference to the mouth breathers you’d be bragging to at the bar who ten seconds ago thought your coworkers were baggage throwers? lol

Not anymore. The soul has been sucked out of the work

I get it. You personally have no marketable skills other than ATC, so you assume none of us do.

If you can't afford a house on a controller salary then you have a serious spending problem
Wake the fuck up. In July, the average sales price of new homes in the United States was $514,800. Interest rates have just now fallen to about 6%. Even if you’re making level 12 pay, home ownership is not realistic for many controllers.
