5 year overseas rule

Does anyone know if ATC falls under the 5 year rule for overseas DOD positions. I’ve read that special skills sometimes don’t fall under that rule. Also if they do fall under that rule are they required to offer a stateside job at the end of the 5 years?

Majority of the time if the position is covered under special provisions or return rights. It will specify which ones in the job bid, usually under additional information

Anecdotal but a guy at my fac spent 7 years overseas, he was able to get a waiver for the extra 2 years, but that was as far as they were allowed to extend it. He then came back to our fac for a year and a half and then went back to the overseas spot. I do know for sure if you take the overseas job you have return rights so you come right back after the 5 years or whatever time it ends up being.
