Government Shutdown

I’m sure they could fax a note if needed. I’ve only done it once for some antibiotics but I don’t see how it would be a problem getting them to write a note for you

Thanks everyone. Too bad it needs to come to this but worth the peace of mind. Though I wouldn’t put it past my facility mgt to still try to do something to me even with a note.

If you’re under doctors orders to not go to work because you’re sick, they can’t do anything to you

On my god management might try to do something...what’s the worst they could do? Talk to you? Letter of reprimand? Why are people so scared of manament? Are there really any stories of how someone truly got railroaded, without doing anything wrong? I’m sorry to say but every story I’ve ever heard and seen people who got in trouble, actually did something, got caught or rubbed it in the face on management, said something to the wrong person. They deserved it. This isn’t pro management, this is saying they are lazy and do you think any one of them actually wants to do the work involved to discipline someone? They are few and far between.

A normal sick day will not and absolutey should cause you to get in trouble. But if you do it excessively that’s when you’ll deserve it. You’ll be screwing your co workers any way. So cheers to you and thanks.

Uh you’re welcome? Yes I understand normal sick days shouldn’t, but given the shutdown and the known likelihood of it being free leave and the dumbasses that are practically bragging about it and the scrutiny, I’d prefer not to be lumped in with the people screwing their coworkers. I’m not a habitual sick leave user, if I get sick I call out and don’t feel bad about because that’s what it’s for, and it doesn’t happen often. My facility does have an issue and unfortunately all get punished for it. I’m not afraid of management but I also don’t like being essentially accused of something I didn’t do and having a letter in my file that’s basically false and a result of other people’s actions. I get that they have a job to do too but maybe instead of management being pussies and punishing everyone, hold the people accountable who are problems and extend the benefit of the doubt to others until they don’t deserve it anymore. That goes for plenty of issues not just sick leave.

I agree with much of this. I also fee that we as a BUE need to not be such pussies and don’t defend or stay quiet about the people who do wrong. I’m not necessarily saying go out of your way to rat but use pro standards, or don’t lie when questioned. “I don’t recall” such bullshit. We allow people to get away with stuff just as much as management does.

Also a letter in your file, big deal. I doubt that’ll happen anyway. The union could poke a hole in that crap so easy and it’s only good for like 6 months anyway. As long as you aren’t truly abusing sick leave big freaking deal.

It’s not a lack of professionalism. It’s people not wanting their livelihoods used in a game of political chess especially given that 75% of the government IS funded. Do you blame people on pre approved leave for not coming back to work? They seem like freeloaders as well... People calling out sick won’t affect anything here. We can only work so many hours and so many planes. The number of people at work don’t change those two things. TOP might go up, but who cares. Politicians need to get their crap together and not use us as pawns.
VERY well said!!!!!

I just read in a shutdown update that Trump issued an EO freezing federal pay in 2019. I'm guessing that's his way of saying hes not in favor of a January raise.

Sick leave requests across the country are up 250% since the shut down began... That shows you the professionalism many of our co-workers possess. I know it won't happen but I hope they get charged their leave or get LWOP. All of us that are actually going to work every day are being forced to work short staffed to make up for those who "are sick".
Do people call out these co workers for screwing you guys over?

Again, how are they screwing people over? It’s no different than people calling in during thunderstorm season. Hell, that’s worse than now given the added complexity. TOP goes up, but safety should never be compromised for efficiency. Whether people are there are not, it shouldn’t bother anyone at all.

So if you’re working a mid and your buddy takes first break and then bangs when he’s supposed to come back...would you say he’s screwing you over or it’s no big deal, it doesn’t matter and so what if your TOP is up?

If you want to take advantage of the situation then that’s your decision but you should at least have the balls to own it rather than using these BS justifications that no one is buying except the people who are doing it.
I’ve worked both pushes of a mid here and it isn’t a big deal at all. Grab a soda, play some music, and vector some Js. If he got legitimately sick and went home, would you still be mad at him?

Legitimately sick? No.

Let’s be honest - we know no one is mad at people who are legitimately sick or people who already had annual approved.
So if someone is trying to use sick leave and the agency puts them in furlough status, how is that different? Most people use SL for spot leave and not legitimate illnesses. It doesn’t affect me at all if people are there or not.

The scenario you described is pretty extreme, but yes that would be a BS move by a co worker. But people calling in during regular day and swing shifts is nothing different then when people do it during weather days. It's a part of the job. Everyone isn't on a high horse

You are being to realistic for him man!

You two can sit together and justify it all you want.

Yeah...at my facility the lowest hour cpc has over 400 hours of OT (and they’re on the “no” list). If someone wants to bang out no one is giving them shit. Most of us are well over 500 hours of OT on the year.

The only time you’re screwing over your coworker is with a bad feed or coming back from break late.
