Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-18-ALLSRCE-57792

Soo. I hate to brag (actually I don't, it's why I'm here), but I got a TOL for Alaska FSS back in October, been going through all that. Then got an ATC TOL before the shutdown. Now I'm at the medical portion for ATC, didn't have to retake MMPI, and I just found out the FSS medical WILL transfer to ATC(class 2 medical). Accidental express pass.

I guess now I'm just waiting for the interim secret clearance (fss was public trust so that didn't help much besides prefilling the new SF-86)

Yes but it depends on the state they’re in. 90% of units don’t have that AFSC. Even then, most have borrowed airspace from FAA or other mil facilities.

Leads me to believe you’re either based out of SC, NC, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Oregon, Wyoming, Louisiana, or Hawaii (May be missing one unit who has ATC)
 
Nope I was active duty until 2 years ago, then went AGR, I meant I could have been ATC from DEP but was dumb and signed up for another job. I do work with ATC and have FAA reps in our guard unit though.

if youre in one of these states which branch is the best to join? air guard vs air force?

Still can. Considering a switch this June since my contract is up. I was going to wait and see if I can get a late TOL so I can just stay in my current specialty. I'm actually on a TDY until May 1st so a late TOL might be perfect since I already have an active TS clearance and fully vetted fed, might make the hiring process faster.

Pennsylvania and Michigan I believe. Although I think Michigan and Wisconsin are CRTC's which typically just help the guard

According to MJ the FAA uses the SF-86 for ATC clearances but it's not actually a clearance, just a moderate-risk public trust background investigation. Dunno if this means you have a super fast track ticket or if the FSS clearance is lower still so they still have to redo it.

Ohh thought it was secret. I thought center was secret... What SF do center controllers have to fill out? I know theirs is different from terminal. Well yeah either way... Gonna have to wait for the interim clearance. For fss I did the SF85, maybe the SF85p, and this one was the 86. I'm just saying the medical being completed early can't hurt. What's your experience with interim timelines? For my 1 federal job and 2 contractor jobs I've had, my interim public trust clearances(lower level) have come back fairly quick.

Michigan is but Penn doesn't have an ATC unit. That was the one I was missing

They can get to whoever they want, and they will look into every foreign contact you have. Especially so if your foreign contacts are from more hostile countries like Iran and China. Background investigators for OPM and other govt. agencies are extremely good at their jobs.

But there's nothing to worry about if you have a clean history or at least have had time pass since less minor issues like cocaine use or misdemeanors. But lots of foreign contacts/travel will slow down your process for sure.

I'm not worried in that sense more worried in the sense that one of my foreign friends is still living with their parents and their parents don't know that we're friends and might start interrogating my friend if they see something in the mail lol Like an inconvenience on my friend's behalf.

Out of curiosity what's the process for this? Like would they mail every contact a questionnaire? Or just run names through databases? Or varies depending on the country/how long you've known them/other variables like that?

I'm glad none of my contacts are from hostile countries if that's going to slow things down a lot lol
