NEST My NEST Experience + what its like to be new to the FAA

We've actually recently had a trainee who was previous experience military and NEST from BOI unplug during monitoring and say "looks like it's getting busy so I'm going to call it lunch" and walk out, the cab had no clue what to say to that...he's currently in a TRB for GC...

This is what we call a 'Pro Gamer Move'.

What was he certified on in boi?

GC/CD, he washed on LC.
Sounds like an asshole but sounds like a guy who pretty much has decided he doesn’t want to make it or knows he can’t make it, and it’s just riding it out with the pay/benefits/etc as long as he can until he gets the boot for real

That's what I thought until recently when he realized he might wash out and started getting nervous, he underestimated the level 5 lol

I don't know much, but I don't think HR cares. If you fill a slot on their paper you should be good to get in. I edited my last post, basically a guy quit after 3 months in the enroute portion of the academy, applied on the next bid and got terminal. Worth a shot to keep applying while you are training at FSS.

As someone in FSS who tried and then gave up on ever getting back to ATS (I transferred voluntarily to FSS), you are ineligible to apply to bids UNLESS you are out of the agency for more than a year. This is per top ATO management to my senator when I sent my complaint about lack of progress after 3 years is fighting with the FAA and NATCA. The RVP of the Alaska Region was informed by a facrep that because of the union's lack of progress with my greviance on the NCEPT excluding FSS dated April of 2018, there are people looking at leaving the agency. What was the RVP's response? "I have sympathy, but no empathy. If they want to quit, let them quit" per multiple people on the TELCON. The union has zero care about FSS and the FAA has less than that. If controlling is your end goal, FSS will only ruin the chances... even if the best case scenario happens, which per the National FSS Rep in NATCA is a minimum 3-5 more years for NCEPT to implement FSS.

Good luck, but if you want back, you'll need to leave the agency first. :(

Really happy you posted this, I didn't really see anything said anywhere like this, but that was my plan anyways.

Truthfully that's the purpose of this post. I was warned and didn't truly recognize the realism of it until now. Ofc hindsight is 20/20, but now I do understand the magnitude of it.

Ya, I posted it in the "FSS jobs in Alaska" thread. Just wanted to give you a heads up. I got 6 more days in FSS, and then I'm out.

The prior experience thing is so weird to me. We've had some who actually had a CTO or a radar ticket and others never got past GC or who only did ASRs as their "prior experience". The latter are always kind of vague about their prior experience and then they don't really do well in training.

not all prior experience is equal. There are some bases where if you’re talking to 3 planes at once it’s a busy session.

So I'm going to creep on in here now that this has died a little bit. What is FSS and why is it so negatively viewed?

Flight service. It's a 2152 position (ATC), but is not the same as a controller. The only positions are in Alaska, and there is no method for leaving them back to a controller position.

Like MJ said above. I think the bigger parts here (atleast for me) is the inability to go back to ATC. I enjoy the job/have enjoyed the job. + the idea of being stuck in Alaska for the next 14 years does not sound appealing to me..... Some may like it though. It pays well and way less stress than ATC supposedly.

Flight Service Station. They're all contracted out now except Alaska. So, a FSS job is technically an ATC job but you don't control planes. I think it's viewed negatively because you get sent to Alaska and you can't be a controller again. But you get to tell people you're from the "flight service side of the air traffic aisle".

Why can't you be a controller again? And if you're not controlling planes, what are you doing?

Edit to add: This should have been in my first post, but I'm sorry Nfingers. It really sounds like you got boned by the FFA.
