So gross income after diffs is about 80k.

Using the smart asset income tax calculator, for 2019 we're looking at $10,775 for federal income tax, and additional $6120 in FICA taxes, and $4184 in NY state income tax. That's $21,079 or 26.35% just in income taxes. Not to mention the FAA matches the FICA tax so that's another $6120 that it costs my employer to employ me. You might as well count that as tax paid by me being that it is simply a cost of employing someone that the employer would otherwise be able to pay to the employee. I know you'll throw a fit though so we won't count that.

Next up, we have sales tax. That comes in at a whopping 8% every time I want to spend my money that I was already taxed on, so that's pretty cool.

I don't own a house but a decent house around here will run you about 170k and it was built in the 60s and comes with a $5k property tax bill. The income tax calculator actually put my property tax bill up at about $7k so $5k would be pretty cheap.

NY taxes every gallon of gas at 45.6 cents. That's like a 23% tax on gas. Awesome.

Then you have your typical vehicle registration fees and annual inspection (chump change coming in at a measily $125ish)

Don't forget your bottle deposit that costs .05 for every can or bottle of water you buy.

I'm sure I am forgetting some things but all in all, the smart asset thing estimates I'm probably paying about 37% of my gross income in taxes. (add that 7.65% employer paid FICA taxes if you dare). At what point is enough, enough?

On top of that, we have all these other wonderful laws up here like how restrictive it is to own a gun and the fees associated with that. I'm not allowed to have any tint on my car windows. They're not allowed to give me plastic bags at the grocery store.

We also have cool laws like a push to get to $15/hr min wage within the next few years with gradual steps. As a result, everything is more expensive. That $1 taco bell value item in OKC? $1.39 up here. My chick fil a order is at least $20% higher up here as well. My grocery bill? Man I miss those Publix BOGO's because they do not exist up here. The best sale they got is like save .30 on oreos when you buy 2 packs. But hey, at least maybe one day everyone will have a living wage, even if that Big Mac meal costs $14.99.

That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are countless more dumb laws I'm missing. But you call that freedom? I'm not even on LI. I guess our ideas of a utopian society are just a little different. Maybe some day I'll be lucky enough to pay more than 50% of my income on taxes, but until then, I'd rather just have a little higher standard of living. On that note, I'm going to bed.
I told you not to waste your time, because guess what....you are barking up the wrong tree.

I openly and frequently support and vote to raise my own taxes. I live in a state where the schools can be subpar depending on the district, the teachers are underpayed and some infrastructure improvements would do a lot to better my local economy, and a big reason why that is is people like you who completely and totally disagree with fractions of pennies on the dollar coming out of your pocket to make these things better, and a state gov that's totally beholden to the oil and gas industry thay gives a damn about anything but corporate profits and thrashing the environment. That has ripple effects from education, to wages, to crime, to the environment and so on, and being better about all those things are better for society as a whole, including my child who will attend those schools, higher wages and better infrastructure raises my property value on my home I own and pay taxes on as well, so on and so forth. It's a direct benefit for me and my community (you too live in a community, as well as the one we share, the USA) to pay taxes.

Hell I've seen okc grow as a local long before I was here for the FAA and longer than probably anyone else on here, and a big part of why we have excellent nightlife for a small city, better roads, a basketball team that gives us national exposure, one of the leading cities in both business and population growth, a bunch of great new parks and public spaces, revitalization of once shitty neighborhoods and so on is because of the MAPS project, which was a penny tax on sales started in the 90s by a democratic mayor has funded all these projects, and by extension made okc a much better place to live than it was even a decade ago, much less 2 or 3.

I feel your pain on the NY state over-legislation on dumb shit like gun control but thats in a broad sense not because you are being taxed, it's because you at being taxed by idiots. Change the idiots, the fact that your are an apparent single dude with no kids, don't own property etc, tells me you have no skin in the game really and no incentive to want that shit to be better. I do.

Not immediately, but ERAM already knows when two planes are on track to collide with one another, TCAS Alerts pilots when they’re on a Collison course with other aircraft, and autopilot can fly a full CAT III approach and even exit the runway. It’ll certainly happen in the future it’s just going to depend on the trust the general public has in the technology to do it.
Idk about you, but it’ll be a long time before I put my life or the lives of others in the hands of ERAM or the EDST. It’s a great tool, but it’s FAR, far away.

The sad truth is some people were born to dig ditches.

Okay, let's take your argument at face value and say some people are born to be ditch-diggers, garbagemen, dishwashers, burger flippers. The "bottom class" if you will.

Let's set aside for moment the fact that these people are the ones who actually make society run, certainly more so than hedge fund managers and hotshot lawyers. After all, many of these jobs will be lost to automation at some point in the not-very-distant future.

Let's take a look at what the intent behind the minimum wage was:
FDR said:
In my Inaugural I laid down the simple proposition that nobody is going to starve in this country. It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By business I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living. source

So my question to you is: what has changed since 1933 that the minimum wage should no longer be a living wage? Why should someone working 40 hours a week not deserve "the wages of a decent living"—let's say enough to support a two-child family on one income, one weeklong vacation a year, a new phone every two years, and a nest egg for retirement?

Because we cut the taxes for those poor poor rich people! Why won’t you think about them? They’ve done so much for the country they should just abuse our labor and use our tax dollars to line their pockets, it’s the least they could do for giving us jobs. You should just be happy they create jobs because no one would step in. They just get bullied by the big bad government. FDR is a bad guy he tries to break up all the super big companies. Poor companies

So the big WSJ story trump was touting is a Kim strassel column? Lol

also happy comey day!

ERAM and the EDST was just an example. Combined with other technology like TCAS, ADSB, etc. I don’t think it’s too far fetched to believe planes will be able to be fully automated gate to gate at some point in our lives. Think about how far aviation has come in the 117 years since Kitty Hawk, NC.

One of the bigger issues with taxes that I have is that the money is mismanaged at all levels of government. I 100% believe we are taxed plenty to cover a lot of the shit you guys want. So much like the gun laws I abhor, why don’t they work to actually enforce the laws on the books? When someone lies on the form you fill out and get denied a firearm that is a crime. The gun stores have to report those I believe, but when I asked they said police don’t follow up. Instead of taxing us more fix what we have now. Cut costs to allow the money to be used elsewhere. And yes, I agree the military budget is ridiculous even though I am a huge military and national security supporter. The whole “burn it or lose it in next years budget” crap is retarded. How much does the FAA pay for these headsets designed in the 50s that have a 6 month life span?

One can argue that allowing us to move and paying for retraining is a huge drain on government funds. If all movement was stopped for MSS-2 and below how much money would be saved that you could use to pay for the programs you want. That’s just one small part of government.

Check out half as interesting and wendover productions also
oh i already do haha he really likes aviation stuff. i think i learned about why alaska is important cuz the USSR wouldn't let people fly over it so europe went above it and refueled in Alaska to get to asia because it was the fastest way

Dude I probably went through 4 or 5 bases last year...the pickle switch bottom part. It would just start randomly cutting out, my voice would just drop off mid-transmission...I would jiggle it around in the jack a little bit and it would start working again but then after a while (few more days/weeks) it would just die completely.

Happened on some super busy local sessions, too...those things are fucking trash.

I completely forgot about my favorite NY law that bans the auto lock on gas pumps because the State of New York likes to remind you who's in charge and make you manually hold the gas pump while freezing your balls off in subzero temps. But hey, at least they protect us from rogue gas pumps malfunctioning and flooding the whole town with gasoline even though I've never heard of that happening.

Good thing I'm a rebel and risk being charged confiscatory taxes in the form of a ticket by shoving my gas cap in there to really stick it to the man.

TRIGGER WARNING HOT TAKE INCOMING: Look, FDR was wrong then and he's wrong now. You can't change the basic laws of economics, which I have already covered in previous posts. I'm sorry to say it but if you can't obtain enough skills to get a steady job to even provide enough for yourself, you most certainly shouldn't reproduce and bring kids into a shitty situation. I make decent money and even I don't think I can support a 2 child family adequately on my income, at least not without feeling like I was poor and living pay check to pay check. Why should I hold off on having kids until I feel like I could adequately support them but pay a fuck ton in taxes to subsidize the lifestyle and poor choices of Steve, the lead fry cook down at McBurger N the Box? Bad news for me is Steve fucks like a porn star and when he realizes he done messed up and knocked up his drug addict girlfriend twice, he realizes responsibilities suck and dips out so now we all get to pay to raise Steve's kids already. I'm not sorry that I don't want to take responsibility for Steve and his high school dropout gf that was dumb enough to get in bed with him.

Ironically, it would be much easier for people to support themselves and a family if taxes weren't so high, the Fed wasn't debasing the currency, and banks paid a historically normal rate of interest (say 5%). There used to be a time when people could just go to high school, graduate and get a job, and be the sole income provider for his family with 5 kids and live a decent middle class lifestyle. My grandfather did it, as well as many others like him. That is basically impossible to do today. You have to ask yourself what has changed since then, and no the answer isn't that the minimum wage hasn't kept up because it's not like my they my grandpa or others were making minimum wage supporting their families. The answer lies in the Fed and sound money and all of the central government planning that has destroyed this country the ability for people's standard of living to keep up with real inflation, not the phony numbers the government produces. It lies in the higher taxes levied to pay for all this wonderful government with its ever expanding laws, regulations, corruption, and fat salaries and benefits for its workers. The private citizens have been getting squeezed for the last century but it's never been more apparent than right now. Any well intentioned law you think would fix the problems we have today would only exacerbate it.
