Don't...it started with chickens, now we have two alpacas, a donkey, and are waiting on emus...and I can't eat any of them...
my wife wants wants alpacas, so those are coming after I build a shop im sure. As long as they dont scare off the deer I dont really mind. I would rather have a couple of llama's for back country hunting but the wife veto'd that one on the basis of they are not as cute.

You can sell their fur too and pretty low maintenance animals...

But look at this alpaca steak...

I had all the animals growing up, I want no part of it now. I want the land, but wooded so it's lower maintenance, but I'm happy with just dogs.

I felt like that for a long time, I miss having fresh eggs though so thats the big one right now. For the last year I've wanted to transition to only eating meat that I've harvested, getting chickens would be another way to move towards that goal.

I've got done alpaca wool socks that are suuuper warm
Lots if people sell raw alpaca fur for some decent cash.
You ever see someone pluck a whole emu? It's comical how big they are, drumstick the size of a turkey
My goal is to have one for Thanksgiving, but like a surprise.
That actually sounds pretty awesome. What kind of cost/upkeep are the alpacas?
They're super low maintenance animals, of course some can get bad if there are issues. General upkeep though is about $500 to $1000 a year, we do most the cleanings/trimming/sheering and they're grazing animals so grasses and pasture plants are game, supplement with feed if you want. If you put too many in an area it'll kill the dirt though.

They're neat creatures to say the least, I just want to eat one.

That's not nearly what I expected honestly. I'm sure, like with most things, the start-up is the more expensive part. I have plenty of research to do and more than enough time being home as a trainee to do it. Not that I could afford it on AG pay though lol. We wanted to get chickens as we have a friend nearby that has close to 50 of them, but come to find out, our city doesn't allow them.

You gotta move out to the country man, its cheaper not only in housing size but I dont pay for water (well), sewer(septic) and I do my own garbage (throw it in a small trailer and take it once a month or two to the local drop box 12$) but you also dont have the city if you can have a couple of chickens.

I know I can look but hypothetically, say I’m about ten grand inside the 12 band, and my facility gets downgraded thanks to covid, as long as I’m inside the 11 band, my pay doesn’t change right?

It does definitely have it's benefits to live in the country. The plan is to be as close to the city as possible while having the freedoms of the country. Who wouldn't love to be able to say they own some alpacas

I just want a reasonable commute and to be able to blast deer out of my bedroom window.

Wife would love that lmao

Haha if only it were that simple. Depends on your definition of "reasonable" but I would ok with driving 45-60 minutes without a second thought. Where I'm at that would be a possibility for you requirements I'm pretty sure
