D-Side For Life?

I’ve been in the agency for 15 years now and this is the first time I’ve seen this. We had a trainee in our area wash out on her first R -sides at the center, her training was terminated but she kept showing up on the floor to work d-side but eventually being pulled from floor mid shift. Eventually she was sent upstairs to training department and no one heard from her for 3 months we just figured she was waiting to go into the NEST and was doing admin work along with the other wash outs and medically DQd scammers. Last week she shows back up on the floor saying she needs her re-cert on her d-sides. Apparently she lawyered up and the center is allowing her to work d-side for the rest of her career? Has anyone else seen this? If so I’m willing to lose my CPC rating, make 100k for the rest of my life and have whatever leave I want with weekends off.

I worked with a guy about 5 years ago who washed on local and was offered flight data at ZFW and took it. No center experience. Isn’t that basically the same thing?

Even though it's BS either way (I'll soon be transferring to ZOA to do the same), I'm curious what their pay will be.

And obviously, I'd expect everyone everywhere to have the same opportunity now.

If she points the finger at all the crap going on, there is no way to argue against her.
Which crap are you referring to? We have a colleague who lives in narcissist land and likes to give daily reports to Management about our conversations and other activities, but none of that crap is substantiated.

This is probably easier than you think. Given how difficult it is to fire people, you just gotta compromise your morals a bit. Start treating your coworkers like trash, add in some edgy but not super over the top racism, distract them from their duties in a way that doesn't appear intentional. It may take two or 3 suspensions, but eventually you get to hang out downstairs long term.

And yes, I'm referring to an actual person.

Flight data at a center isn’t a control position. You can work it off the street without going to the academy. There’s no medical. There’s no age limit. It’s just a job

As you pointed out, people like that notice every little thing you do. They remember and when the heat is on, they know it all and are more than happy to point it out. While most of it cant be legitimately substantiated by inept managment or purposefully ignored, the decision is made not to fight them is easier than to say that they are full of shit.

She probably needed an attorney to make it happen, but that is a dream job.

If it’s in a low COLA center like Cleveland, KC, Salt Lake I think that really could be called the “best job in the world”.

Make above 100K in the D2 band, cap out over 120K, still call yourself an air traffic controller and be correct, retire with full ATC benefits, have zero job stress, easier to get leave but still be eligible for OT, probably still be qualified to become a sup or staff specialist one day if you are crazy enough to leave the D-Side job.

Call me a lazy coward but I would rather do this at a desirable center then be a CPC almost anywhere, it’s simply a better deal.

I agree. Can we at least know the facility? Does this not set a precedent?

I'm not at a center-but the training rules are crazy.
The actual policies and standards are 3 hours? a day regardless of staffing, consistently.
Have you put references down on all your ojti sheets? Had team meetings weekly or monthly or whatever? Skill checks?

The policies that are implemented are great at getting trainees consistent stuff, but when they aren't follow it's easy to point and say-Look I wasn't successful because the FAA/Union didn't follow their own policy. It's an all you can eat buffet of hours.

It's disgusting that 3hrs a day is acceptable...when I trained (at two Zs) I personally thought anything less than 4 was a bad day...regardless of what certs I already had. A lot of trainers here don't seem bothered by taking every break offered, even if it means skipping busy traffic: I've routinely said "Where's a training team when you need one."

My area has someone who has no business being a controller. They were up to their last dozen hours on their current position, and are back to article xx hours. They already had free hours after the last covid training stoppage. Person barely gets any consistent training or even asks to be trained, and when they do, are trained by the one person in the area who scarcely writes anything on training sheets. Even if they went to a TRB, they are coming back; a supe failed to give them a skills check 9mos ago. This person is already a shitbag controller (who has long since proven the ability to drag down the performance of those around them), with a shitbag attitude, but unfortunately they are going to keep getting hours until they get certified becuase no one can follow whatever proper procedure is at this point.

It's interesting that I've heard more of the "process" protecting these types, versus those who put effort in and honestly try.

Not sure why anyone has to ask to be trained. Where I work you show up and get into a training rotation. You train 4-6 hours every day.
