FAA controller hired with Air Services Australia

I'm in Sydney just starting my OJT. So far only know of 2 other Americans in Australia. Been the second group of TCU hire could be wrong. Has its pros and cons for sure but some people got some of the info incorrect. As anything else in life gotta make the choice for you and yours. I'm not a FAA controller. Been in the middle east area for 11 years then took this job.

What’s the pay like with taxes and cost of living/rent?

I think cost of living is reasonable. If you buy a car outright the money you would have to pay rent, bills, and groceries is not an issue. You can find some good places to rent. It's how fancy you want to live. You do have to pay for medical insurance until you become permanent resident. You just have to file your claim with the insurer then you get 70% back. Meds are cheaper here as well. No age limit on working. Just have to pass your medical.

What’s typical rent like vs salary where you work/live?

Depends on where you live. For Sydney further west from the city rent is cheaper. The district i live in is close to work and has good beaches. Cheapest rent i seen is 650 to 700 Aud weekly; obviously it goes up from there. I chose this district due to no tolls to and from work. Tolls are pricey in Sydney but has routes for longer drives to pay less or no tolls at all.

Same tax rate but free healthcare and education, fucking pussies
Crazy seeing the haters. I won't spend a single minute worrying if my kid will get shot at school today. My boy had 4 lock downs last week alone...fucking zero in australia. "Omg they are so woke"...get the fuck outta here. Their violent crime is 80% less than the US, they don't have people dying because they can't afford meds, they have less traffic accidents, rape, gun violence, etc by a metric that these imbeciles can't understand. If that's "woke", yeah man. Im woke.

Healthcare free for Australian residents. Not us

No one hating, just asking questions. Sounds like you’d be happier working there I think?

Yeah, I'm also very interested in working over there. I think I have until mid May when they close this round.

What's the transfer process like? Really only interested if I could guarantee Melbourne Center or at least be there within a couple years.

Hopefully, you or any of the other people that got picked up can update the thread as you go along the process. Would definitely be beneficial to people looking into this in the future.

Just apply and go through some really easy motions to get in the queue. I was asked in the first call where I would consider living and how soon. Then after a more formal chat/interview it was discussed again and I changed my answer and they changed my options for me. But I was on the early side of everyone applying. Could be different now. Even though I have approach experience because it was over 5 years ago I cannot even be considered for it. Towers only.

My only guess is their hiring process is probably too stringent and they wash too many applicants. But I haven't tried to research it.
I think there’s some commonwealth agreement that they can go work in Canada at least for a few years. Maybe they all go there to make more?

There are only 2 centers in the country. It is Brisbane or Melbourne. 50/50 shot i guess. Most people prefer brisbane. Wish I got Brisbane as well but I was only offered Sydney take it or leave it. I should have held out but it is what it is.

How can they not find Australians to do this job? There’s several Australians that work in Canada even.
Their hiring and academy process is brutal from what i saw at the Melbourne academy. Pass rate is low for sure. For the internationals coming you will be working some class G and E traffic. Which was new for a lot of us internationals. Phraseology definitely different.

How so? Curious operationally wise.

I've rarely worked glass g but here they seem to work more of it. Nothing crazy but it's part of the daily traffic. Guess something happened in the past and now they handle are more involved with glass G and E. Just basic atc service of course nothing crazy. Noise abatement is a real thing here. The other guy keeps saying woke. I don't see it around or at work. Yes I think it is safer for families and medical expenses are not that expensive depending on how serious your medical situation is.
