Specialization Change

Hi All, does anyone know how one might request a specialization change? I'm selected for Enroute but would really like to change to Terminal. My HR rep says the ATO selects that for you based on their needs (got my TOL 3 yrs ago and he will be unable to help me there). Just thought I'd ask if anyone has attempted a specialization change and how they went about it. Thanks!

If HR says they can't help you, whether or not you think it's true, just go with it. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure out FAA bureaucracy. Check out at a Center then ERR out to a terminal facility.

Go to a center first. You'll get to a higher pay a lot faster. Then transfer.

And a center washout has the opportunity to select a terminal facility as a second chance usually if you perform good enough.

Get that high pay at a center then transfer out to high level terminal facility or wherever you’re trying to be. If you can’t transfer out right away... I personally think it’d be better to be stuck at a center making level 11-12 pay then to be stuck at some level 4-5 tower making peanuts.

He may be a tier 2 like me. I got my TOL on the 2017 prior experience bid. I am currently awaiting a facility list.

I actually got my TOL switched from Enroute to Terminal in 2017, but I also had a CTO. I've never heard of anyone else getting theirs switched.

I bet if you told them you want to go to Fairbanks or St. Thomas, they’ll switch you to terminal. But, for your retirement and future, stick with the en route and then ERR if you’re desperate...

Hi All, thanks for the input. I will certainly take what I can get and make a transfer later but just figured I would ask the question since I didn't see it asked and answered here or on SM. Yes, my TOL was handed down 3 years ago (got the Tier 2 treatment). Still waiting on FOL which I hope comes soon but I don't expect it to given the current climate.

If you already asked your HR rep the decision is made. Each Hr person has their own idea about it. I’ve known people who have changed, but they wouldn’t change my brothers. ?‍♂️

If you’re prior experience and have a CTO You might be able to get it changed, based on the fact that it’s proven you can be successful in the terminal. If you’re OTS/CTI you’re stuck.
