Are you applying for a promotion? To be considered for a promotion, you must provide SF-50(s) that shows that you have held the next lower GS grade for at least one year. SF-50s that have an effective date within the past year (e.g., General Adjustment SF-50 from this year or Within Rate/Grade Increases (WRI/WGI) SF-50 within a year) do not clearly show that you meet the one-year time-in-grade requirement. That means if you submit an SF-50 that is dated within the last year, you must submit another SF-50 that is dated more than one year ago to clearly demonstrate you meet the time-in-grade requirements. If you are a DoD employee, you can obtain a copy of your SF- 50(s) from MyBiz.

Check the Education section above to see what is allowed and what is required. Any claims you make in your resume or assessment questionnaire regarding education or degrees MUST be supported by submitting with your application official or unofficial transcripts or a list of courses, grades earned, completion dates, and quarter and semester hours earned issued from your school. While unofficial transcripts are acceptable for initial application, an official transcript will ultimately be required if you are selected for the position. You may submit a copy your degree(s) if specific coursework does not have to be verified.

Are you a veteran claiming 5-point veterans' preference or claiming sole survivorship preference? You must submit a copy of your latest DD-214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (any copy that shows all dates of service, as well as character of service [Honorable, General, etc.] is acceptable) OR a VA letter that shows dates of service or service connected disability AND character of service. If you have more than one DD-214 for multiple periods of active duty service, submit a copy for each period of service. If you were issued a DD-215 to amend aforementioned information on the DD-214 you must submit that too. If you are not sure of your preference eligibility, visit the Department of Labor's website: Veterans' Preference Advisor

Are you a disabled veteran or claiming 10-point veterans' preference?
If you are eligible to claim 10 point veterans preference you must submit a DD-214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty as described above for 5-point preference.

The statement of service must provide the branch of service, rate/rank, all dates of service, the expected date of discharge and anticipated character of service (Honorable, General, etc.).

Documents submitted as part of the application package, to include supplemental documents, may be shared beyond the Human Resources Office. Some supplemental documents contain personal information such as SSN and DOB and some documents such as military orders and marriage certificates may contain personal information for someone other than you. You may sanitize these documents to remove said personal information before you submit your application. You must provide an un-sanitized version of the documents if you are selected.

Any Questions feel free to PM me about them, I'll post positives /negatives later. No it isn't my position but a colleague that is transferring. Keep in mind we are 30% on the 2022 SSR table.

There is also ATC Premium pay with is an additional $150, and on base housing available to DoD civilians with a 3 bed/2bath going at 1850 (significantly cheaper than off base housing options, prior to obtaining my unit I was renting a 1 bed/bath at $2250).

When I took this job a year ago, they offered me a $15,000 relocation incentive so if selected, make sure to ask. One guy here didn’t think to ask so he is stuck with nothing.

Facility is open 0700-2200, closed federal holidays for now (ZMA is pissed off at us for having to work traffic)

Work schedule is M-F, my shift is 0630-1430 (2 slots) other shifts are: 0800-1600, 0900-1700, 1000-1800, 1400-2200. Civilians do not work weekends or federal holidays.

There is spot leave, unless a massive COVID hit occur, it is always approved.

Approach is where to earn you money, expect to train on that first if you get selected, I certified in 3 1/2 weeks on approach.

We do have a PAR, experience with it is highly desired.

Typical of Florida our busy season is in the winter with annual SFARPS (Strike Fighter Advanced Readiness Program) a few times a year.

Roughly 3.5, hours to Miami depending on traffic.

They are in the planning stages for a Class Charlie and are preparing to split approach into 2/3 sectors (I have opinions but meh).

EYW controllers are… interesting to work with...

ZMA MTH sector for the most part is decent (I love you WM) but it has its moments.

ATCFO is a good guy who does his best to help the civilians, we have our own break room with our own TV /couches. I did try to bring NATCA in but two of the civilians voted it down for “reasons.”

If you are coming from a higher level you can see if DOD will match your pay, there’s a pub somewhere I’ll have to look for it.

Overall it’s a cush facility where we constantly train people (10% OJTI is available but isn’t mandatory so we don’t get it…) and the only way I see myself leaving is if I score a Germany job (Yes I still want it) or once the FAA reinstatement process starts up again I get a 11/12 or desired location.

Hey I applied for this job in 2021 after I got out of the AF. Got an over the phone interview, didn’t do the hottest on said interview, but over the phone interview?? Come on what kind of horse shit is that? Not even a zoom or something? Anyways, ended up having to go contract in Kabul from March-August so I was there for the draw back and evacuation for all Americans in the city (fun stuff).. and now I’m in the FAA. Funny to think what my life would be like had they hired me down there. I’m from the Tampa Bay Area so I would like to think maybe I would’ve made it a long term gig, which I’d imagine is something they’d want lmao

Phone interviews are the norm for DoD, I have done a couple. Questions are mostly related to training and getting to know the person to see if they are a good fit for the facility. What was your objection to the phone interview? I’ll take a phone interview over a zoom face to face.

Hate to break it to you, but most jobs in the world do phone interviews if you aren’t local. Maybe more zoom since Covid, but it’s not exactly uncommon. You’re better off though bc you’d end up working with gulfcharlie. Would have been more fun to stay in Kabul after everyone left.

It just felt a little impersonal for me, and of course it just so happened that either mine or the interviewers phone connection had to be spotty, so several times she or I would be breaking up and I’d have to say “hello, are you there?”

Fwiw they had a lot of applications and everyone that interviewed (from what I was told) turned it down hard. The building is a bit spotty and I will say it is difficult to find some decent reception (inside at least) but there are not a lot of alternative spots to hold conversations.

Yeah honestly it was probably also due to the fact that I hadn’t done a phone interview before in my life so maybe I should’ve just prepared for it better

The funny thing is after the interview I didn’t hear anything back and kept trying to reach out again and again for updates on whether or not I was getting the job because I was heading out the door for Kabul and would’ve taken Key West in a heart beat over contracting lol. So I’m sure that didn’t help my case but I was definitely desperate at the time

Moving forward be prepared to talk about training, what your training style is, your commitment to learning things the “navy” way, put some enthusiasm in your voice like you cannot wait to set foot in the facility, mention the fact that you are prepared to show up and blaze through training so the facility has a useable body, what will you do if you have a difficult trainee, and how would you react to a trainee that just “doesn’t get it?”

You do not have to be perfect but I can assure you enthusiasm and desire will get you farther than most.

HR is… the most uncommunicative and biggest challenge to this job period. Don’t hesitate to PM me and I can see (no promises of course) what the status is (I have no input on selections, or know who they selected) or if someone has questions.

I’ll be honest my first DoD interview I totally butchered it as well. Regardless if I wasn’t 100% sure about taking it (if offered) I regret not doing my due diligence. It was also a Navy base. But you live and learn and GC made some really good points.

For what it’s worth, and GC is 100% spot on about HR, it was 2 months 3 weeks between submitting my application and getting referred. My referral notification was 2 months ago. No interview, no notice saying the job has closed, nothing. So about 5 months since the job posting. (Mind you, I literally worked at NQX for 4 years lol)

Lol yeah that’s true and no surprise. Idk if it’s me or not but all government jobs take their sweet time in the hiring process. The FAA was atrocious

The Navy has been especially bad. Air Force seems to be the best with regards to speed and efficiency in the hiring process. I’ve applied to a few AF gigs and bid open to bid closed was max 2 months for each.
