So, You're Marrying an ATC...

my wife actually bought me one as a joke when I CPC’d that said “I AM AN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER AND BLAH BLAH BLAH”. And I went to a RTF with a guy who wore shirts like that not ironically.
Damn, did you guys give him shit? I get some controllers are aviation nerds and super into it, but that’s a little aggressive. Especially around a bunch of other controllers lol. Just asking to get ripped on

Haha, exactly. Like the pilot that wears his uniform to the grocery store. Tells his neighbors how many time zones he crossed, and he’s practically an astronaut

Anyone remember headset guy from stuck mic about 7 years ago? The one from the academy who was wearing his headset all over OKC

I bet that’s the OP’s husband
Holy shit this might be the dude who was in my enroute class!! We had a guy that was a teacher and got hired on the ots bid. We watched pushing tin as a class down there and he was hooked. Once we got our headsets in nonradar he wore it everywhere. Lunch, driving around, etc… he had a shitty nasty ass duck feather taped to it that he found from Isola Bella that he wore most of our radar problems. Instructors convinced him to take it off before the evals. Poor guy. He cracked me up. Dude failed after his 2nd eval. Good dude though

There were pics on stuck mic but the pussy ass moderators pulled them down
Dude wore his headset to Walmart ?

This is scary accurate and frequently comes from younger controllers. They do the arrogance thing, God Complex etc. Screaming and trying to distract their trainee claiming it’s to “train them” to handle high pressure and focus during an emergency or other challenging situation. The reality is they do it to show off to those around them about how knowledgeable, clever, and hilarious they are. I never understood why trainers took such pride in training like this. The mark of a good teacher is taking something complicated, and understanding it so well you can make it easy to your trainees. If you take something basic and make it sound absurdly hard for what it is, you’re a shitty trainer. Why are you proud of this? Those with mediocre skills are the ones who talk the most shit and point out and gossip about others performance. If you’re truly at the top of your game, you have no reason to put others down or point out their issues.
I do agree that all these character traits you described are really spot on, but it’s only for the simple-minded ones who need a self -esteem boost after a lifetime of being shat on due to their personality. Just laugh, feel sorry for them, and move on.

I did start to get pretty impatient after doing this job for a while. I just got used to pilots answering quickly so when regular people think for a moment after I ask or say something I get kind of irritated. ? But I don't even really like to tell people what I do; they usually don't get it anyway.

I hate when people do all that stereotypical stuff though. I worked with a lady who on more than one occasion, when relaying a story about how some pilot didn't do something right or whatever or questioned her, used a quote something like "You better do what I say, I'm your God!"

This'll date me: Two girls who, immediately after getting the job changed their MySpace (lol) profile names to show "ATC" preceding the name they already used and a control tower pic or some shit in their profile.

Or the girl at RTF with an ATC vanity plate on her car, who was all up the instructors butts trying to be down about knowing some old dude at her facility that they worked at back in the day, like she was now in some secret club with them. "HAHAHA yeah old Smitty is still there! Still up to his same old hijinks!"

I heard about that headset guy. Some said he was wearing it out to bars and stuff, telling people he could be recalled at any time so he had to be ready.

I just did a search for ATC t-shirts and they're so bad. I wouldn't be caught dead in one but someone must be buying these.

Once we had AF1 at our facility and this guy worked the aircraft. A few days later he came in wearing a shirt with "I worked Air Force 1" on it. He claimed "some family member had it made" for him, not his choice.

I might wear this one though:

best atc shirt is the "you get it up, ill guide it in" one. but i used to work with a guy whos coffee cup said "dont make me use my atc voice" unironically. he was a real prick when training.
