FAA Reauthorization Act of 2023

Have you seen how many times someone is a slant alpha and has rnav fixes and no one says anything. Again basics is useless
yup got me there. I was in training and didn't want to cheat and use the iPad... but in real life those slant alphas are all using the iPad...

If the tag starts as a VFR tag up (VP message) in ERAM /A is the default suffix. However in my 9yrs I can’t recall the suffixes ever being taught at either facility. They are just listed on a table thats under the glass. SOPs and LOAs just stress RNAV arrivals/fixes if equipped. I do see a fair bit of “No RNAV SIDs/STARs RNAV Point to Point Okay” in remarks. Whether I catch it is another story, but typically they still file /L.

Meh you've got to have a way to get rid of the completely terrible people. Or the people that freeze up ans can't handle the nerves/pressure. The Academy is that. You think the new hires you are getting now are terrible imagine if there was no screening before they got to the facility.
One of my OKC classmates who washed, said we were waiting in the hallway “If I can’t handle doing this here, how am I going to handle it when its real airplanes and real people.”

On a serious note direct to facility would be stupid. Struggling with the map at the academy? Feeling overwhelmed? Meh.

I think basics could be a prerequisite for application- applicants are encouraged to study these PowerPoints prior to entry and work on this map. Give 3 study days at Oklahoma followed by a test instead of four weeks

Half the stress at the academy is not knowing where tf you’re gonna live. You could go get exposed to atc for a couple months learn how to give a clearance or something then go. And you could probably go with someone else who you’ve already met and have a support system.

It's not useless

As an OTS hire, I learned a lot there. I am not an aviation dork.. It's hard to retain it all, but it's better than nothing. They just need to wash more people out at the academy. They could stand to wash a good 20-30% more people out, as could my own facility...

This could be solved by finding a more efficient and effective hiring process. It’s ridiculous that it takes years to hire people and then you still need a weeding out process like OKC. It’s clear the ATSA is a fucking joke to determine whether people have the skills for the job or not.

Europe does a three part test which you can fail out at any stage. Fail and you cannot reapply for two years. I'm not sure what additional training is required if you pass the test.... I'd imagine it varies by country.

.... So I guess everyone hired 7+ years ago had no "stress" at the academy since they knew where they were going already.... I love hearing all the people that weren't around when it was different, explain how much better it would be if it was how it used to be.... which was changed because it didn't work....

You don’t see it being more stressful not knowing where you’re moving too in a week. Come on man.

I might be dumb for asking but, why isn't the Retired Military Controller bid not a continuous loop if staffing is such a huge issue?
It technically is. It’s always readvertised. It just takes the FAA a year to get somebody onboard with their amazing process. But again, it’s hurry up and wait government shit like any branch of government.

You’d think so, but with the new crop of hires and the quality of zoom based instruction they fail 3-4 each class in basics. Meanwhile, in 2014-15,16 they failed 1-3 the entire year.

I would postulate that if you don’t know or can’t understand the background material in basics you don’t belong in the career field. It would be like a mechanic who doesn’t know that there’s more than one kind of car

Not true. We have had 3 controllers in the last year certify and a month later freak out on position and now are upstairs teaching recurrent and SOPs with CPC pay with no intention of ever returning to the floor. Offered a lower facility with less complexity but they won’t leave because of the pay. The scam that keeps on giving.

Biggest stress at the academy is being mistaken for your roommate who is sleeping with the girl from class and her husband is in town for a surprise visit and wants to know where she is.

What’s your proposed solution?

CTI schools are borderline scams and putting a financial barrier on hiring is immoral.

If you had pre-employment knowledge tests, you run the very real risk of people learning the wrong way to do things with little to no benefit.

Get rid of the ATSA? Then we’ll be paying people’s way to MMAC that can’t do basic math, have no logic skills, and have shit awareness.

It’s not immoral to require above McDonald’s to qualify for the job. I think with the quality of trainees now the whole cti debate can be put to bed. It’s way worse now

Every new hire will be this, and I fear for the future of ATC

Cool hopefully I can get out of the cab for the entire summer for the academy specialist they need in honolulu
I know this is a joke but I did some digging and found this website which lists "Large Hub" airports:
And this entry which lists Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA):

Cross referencing the two gives: DCA/IAD, EWR/LGA/JFK, FLL/MIA, ORD/MDW.

According to https://www.faa.gov/jobs/who_we_are/offices_locations
There is no regional office in FLL/MIA. Unclear if FAA HQ counts as a regional office but in any case, there's no Certificate Management Office there so it's out.

There are FSDOs and CMOs in the NYC MSA and Chi MSA.
So the 2nd academy would be established either in Chicagoland or NYC Metro Area.
