Medical LASIK

Former coworker got lasik done and I think she was only out for about a week or two. Not sure about any surgery beyond that.

Thanks all for the responses. I asked around at my facility the most people say don't bother with it, since the FS could pull my medical and make me jump through hoops to get it back.

That’s stupid. Getting lasik has been the single best quality of life improvement I’ve ever done.
There’s no difficulty getting medical back assuming no complications with the surgery.

I had my medical pulled for about 48 hours after lasik. I’m about 3 months in, so still under that 6 month conditional medical.

I heard that too before I did it. I think the process used to be a lot more difficult, because all of the previous generation at my facility tried to talk me out of it. I agree with the above though, it is incredible.

I haven't been given an academy start date or anything. But what are the pros and cons doing lasik now or waiting till i'm working as an atc. Since i heard you have to get permission once you're employed.

To the people who had lasik before starting the academy--did it slowed down your medical clearance any? did the flight surgeon ask for any med releases from your lasik surgeon?

Had it done before the FAA. During the medical phase they asked if I’d had any surgeries so I put LASIK. Guy called and asked for the date of the procedure, I told him and he said since it had been over two years, I didn’t need to do paperwork. I believe if it’s less than two years, you have to do some paperwork and maybe go see a doctor about it.

I didn't have Lasik but had floaters removed right before I got my TOL. I just had to have a form filled out by the surgeon and do a field vision test before they signed off on my medical.

As an FAA employee, when getting LASIK you lose your medical for a few days. You also have to have an eye exam and paperwork filled out by the LASIK place at one week post op and six months post op... I'd imagine more if something doesn't go well.

I'd expect that if you get LASIK within six months of being hired the same paperwork would be required. They'll definitely ask you to get an eye exam either way

I got my lasik right before the academy after getting my tol but before my medical. had to do that extra 6 month check while i was at the academy. failed some kinda test, had to go retake it and tell the doctor to be sure he got the right numbers on that test lol. had no problems when I got my last medical taken in january though.

oh and LASIK is awesome. a lot of the time i dont even think about what it was like to not be able to see as my contacts got old, not always have my eyes watering after having my sleep ins in for 30 days. not waking up with dry eyes....man it's nice forgetting I wore contacts from age 11 to 26.

Just had mine done a few months back. 7 day down period. Management will allow you office work if you request it to save your leave. If they don't have work for you (If you work weekends) then you'll be required to use to leave.

Was that just another eye exam?

Yeah you'll need an eye exam at 6 months whether you're in the academy or a controller already. They give you a six month temporary medical clearance. For all of your exams there's an FAA eye exam form you bring and have your doctor fill out
