Pool 1 and 2?

Just checked and I'm referred in pool 2. What is the difference between pool 1 and 2? I thought pool 1 was veteran preference and 2 was not. I am a veteran with veteran preference. I'm probably wrong but yeah just wondering. Thank you!

It's listed right in the job announcement. Pool 1 is military or CTI graduates, Pool 2 is everyone else. You had to choose which pool you wanted to apply for when you submitted your application. It looks like you probably selected Pool 2 by mistake. That doesn't mean your application is invalid or anything, as you can still be hired from Pool 2 even if you're eligible for Pool 1, but it's possible you may no longer receive veteran's preference - not sure how that works.

For the record, is it even better to be pool 1?

IIRC, the FAA has to hire approximately the same number of people from each pool, within 10% I believe. So if they hire 500 people from Pool 1, then the number of Pool 2 hires has to be between 450 and 550.

As to whether Pool 1 is better or not, it comes down to odds and number of applications. If there are 501 Pool 1 applicants and 3000 Pool 2 applicants, then your odds are obviously quite a bit better in Pool 1. But if you had some sort of knowledge of guess that there might actually be more Pool 1 applicants than Pool 2 (which seems unlikely to me), then you could choose to apply for Pool 2.

I'd say the 40 something people from last year's bid that were band 1 and didn't get a TOL would say no.
The assumption there is that they are vets. The benefit to being pool one and vet preference is the extra points. So you go pool two, you don't get the extra points which could be the determining factor between a TOL or not. The unfortunate side of it is that you'll never know what your scores were and how close or far away you were to receiving that email.

Back until this year pool 1 was def better. A lot of us couldn’t get through the BQ and pool 1 got us in. But now it’s probably best to be in whoever pool has less ppl.

I'm confused by this. You understand he's referring to people who were in pool 1 band 1 in last year's bid who didn't get a TOL right?

How do people know what band they were in at all? I thought there was no information on the scores?

Huh? I thought Band 1 was 80% or above, Band 2 was 70%-80%. Pool has nothing to do with scores (except people say that vet pref points are added to the score, or were in the past).

I was also selected for pool 2! I can't quite remember- is there a way to know what band you are in? I remember reading that they are not allowed to tell you your score, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct, they’ll never tell you what you scored
