Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-17-ALLSRCE-53474

Any homeowners? I'm struggling with either trying to sell my house or rent it out for 4 months somehow and then selling it after I (hopefully) pass the academy. Doubt ZDV will be taking new grads so don't think i'll be back here for a while.

Starting the CIL process this evening.

Right here. Struggling with the same thing. My wife and I have talked it to death and I think we are going to not sell until after the academy plays out and cross that bridge when we get there. I'm hoping the euphoria of passing the academy will help me through the pain of inevitable short term money loss and stress.

Or maybe I flunk out and I end up back in Seattle with no job and a house I can't afford because I quit my job.

... anyway, good luck with your decision!

My corporate 7-3 job put more stress on my marriage and family life than this job ever will. I would even say taking this job has helped me and my wife spend more time together.

When I tell people I'm going to be an air traffic controller, they say, "Wow, that's a really stressful job". Compared to the cat herding I'm doing now, hanging out in a tower cab recording AWOS remarks sounds like a vacation.

One of my current controller friends told me, "It's only stressful if you suck at it"
That statement is dead on. Same goes for the academy. The academy difficulty is proportional to your skill level. If you're good, your problems will be far easier overall. If you struggle, you will get yourself into poor situations, you will have more airplanes in the pattern due to self-induced delays, and your problems will be infinitely harder.

I'm sure it's my arrogance talking, but I have no doubt in my ability to do this job as an off the street nobody.

What I'm not confident in is my ability to play the game at the academy. I've never been one to study. I didn't go to college. I haven't had to use my brain in 14 years. My head is full of fantasy football stats and calendar dates for my kids' activities.

I got my class date! Enroute OTS 3/28 class date!

NICE. Finishing up my CIL requirements next week! If the timelines remain consistent, and nothing flags in my medical I'll probably be looking at a late April class date. I can't imagine how great the FOL phone call must feel!

That's the plan. I understand the importance and I welcome the challenge.

Use basics as a relatively safe time to work out a system for yourself. Get with a good study group as soon as possible and absorb. I was a D and F student in high school and finished in the top of my class in college because I figured out how to study, so it's definitely not hopeless. I noticed in school that all the parents with kids did well mainly because they had good time management skills--so use those to your advantage especially since you are bringing family along. In contrary to what you said I've been in many aviation jobs but I honestly have no clue if I'm suitable for ATC or not. I'll just have to find out.

I wasn't a great studier either until I took organic chemistry my sophomore year in college and it wrecked me. Luckily with that I could just retake it. I highly suggest getting some study habits down. Learn what works, whether it be note cards, listening to music, recording lectures via audio (if we're allowed to). Whatever works for you.

Fear is also an outstanding motivator! You'd be surprised what you can accomplish when unemployment, shame from family and home foreclosure is the result of not passing your tests at the academy.

It's a great feeling, nothing quite like seeing an Oklahoma number on your phone and having a freak out trying to answer and sound normal LOL

I'm in an office environment with my department and 4 others on the same floor as myself. My supe is is the office right by me, and everyone can hear you if you talk at a decent level. With that being said... the whole floor will know when I've gotten my FOL. I'm thinking I'll let out a Rick Flair "Wooooo!" when that call comes through.

After completing your SF86, are you locked out of the e-QIP system? I've either forgotten my password or I'm locked out.
