Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-18-ALLSRCE-57792

This week, my CTI professor went with the CTI people to D.C. to talk to a whole heck of a lot of politicians about a bunch of stuff. Here's what they told me:
  • New bid will be in June
  • If you scored Qualified on the ATSA you most definitely will not get a TOL
  • If you scored Well Qualified, you probably won't either FOR THIS BID
  • Reference list is still open for Best Qualified, but don't hold your breath.
  • The ATSA bands are based on firm numbers. We do not know the numbers as they are not published, but it's something along the idea of 70-80 is Qualified, 81-90 is Well Qualified, and 91+ is Best Qualified. They are not doing the sliding scale thing anymore.
This is the info I've been waiting for. Thanks so much! I'm in the "Well qualified" group so I guess I need to retake the test for the next bid to see if I can move up to "best qualified". Im turning 25 next week so I got five more years to play this game before I age out lol.

Welcome! I just booked a room at Anatole through FAArooms.com super easy and they look really nice. Also know of another guy with our date that has booked at Kim’s. Haven’t seen too many of us yet

Yup I’m staying at the Anatole! I booked through Faarooms.com super easy to book and they are the closest to the academy plus a shuttle to class.

Sweet, look forward to seeing you guys in OKC! I know of another gal staying at TownePlace and there’s a couple of members on Stuck Mic with our date as well. I got my FOL April 1 and I feel like some May 3rd dates are still popping up here and there.

I can’t say I’d complain about a small class if it ends up being one - it’d be to our benefit.

The bigger the class the better. The more people who graduate the more choices for facility placement.

Update: the scores are 70-80 Qualified, 81-85 Well Qualified, 86+ Best Qualified.

The house has passed a bill to make a preference for Vets and CTI. They are working with the Senate to get a bill passed there so it seamlessly gets passed.

Basics are moving from instructor led to CBT based and they are looking to add games and stuff to make the learning stick better.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, Vets and CTI are already granted preference. That's the whole concept between having pool 1 and pool 2, so Vets/CTI don't need to compete against OTS.

Can you post a link of the bill the house passed.

A computer based class sounds miserable. I'd much rather have a human instructor ?

Except at the moment, they take 50% from Pool 1 and 50% from Pool 2. From what I gleaned, the idea of the bill is: When hiring numbers are set, they add 10% on top because they know some people are going to wash out in the process. It doesn't say that 10% has to be evenly split between the Pools, so they are trying to do 50% from each to get the hiring number, then an extra 10% from Pool 1 for the contingency number.

Here's the bill. I was incorrect in saying they passed it, so they haven't put it up yet. But it's very favorable to everyone and shouldn't have a problem getting passed.

Again, I wasn't personally there to hear all this and talk to them, it's just what the CTI instructors told me.

Text - S.1148 - 116th Congress (2019-2020): A bill to amend title 49, United States Code, to require the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration to give preferential consideration to individuals who have successfully completed air traffic controller training and veterans when hiring air traffic control specialists.

I 100% agree, but maybe this is their attempt at getting the infrastructure in place to hire more people at a faster rate since they're behind hiring goals. There will be an instructor there to answer questions or explain anything you don't understand, but for the most part, it's you reading the ATBs and answering the ELT questions by yourself.

ZAN is one of the few places that you can pick even if it's not on your pick list. People actually pick it.

But they can send you to Puerto Rico.
I'll take Puerto Rico, my mom's side of the family all lives there. I think I put it higher on my rankings

Really? I honestly had the idea of moving to Alaska. I love the outdoors
Really it is what you make of it I guess. Anchorage as a town has an incredibly high crime and drug rate. There are some nice areas and a lot of access to some incredible places. But like I said, the city as a whole is quite a dump.
