Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-18-ALLSRCE-57792

Getting way ahead of myself here but really would like to know from the dudes that passed the academy, when your class is picking their facially from the list can you trade places with people or pay people for their choice? Or is it final once you pick?

You can try and work it out before selection. There has been stories of some deals going down.

Everyone in my class knew what they wanted and it went smoothly on selection day.

How does that list work? Is the number of locations available equal to the number of graduates or is there plenty to go around? Like if you’re dead last are you gonna be stuck with the one and only option that’s left? And facilities that are fully staffed or not in need as much as others just won’t be on the list at all?

Terminal Placement list

This is "the list" for Terminal (e.g.), you can see that eligible facilities (level 4-7 towers or up/downs) are "reserved for academy graduate", and will be offered to the next class that finishes. It used to be that they offered two facilities per person in the class, and for everyone who didn't pass two dropped off the bottom so the list was smaller for everyone else to choose from. Now they only offer one per, so the options are more limited.

Every single question you've asked is covered in the FAQ

Ain’t nobody got time for that

Well thank you for ruining my childhood dream of living in Green Bay and being able to afford tickets to packers games hahaha.

And I found the FAQ, which I apparently couldn’t not find before. Mainly because I never looked for it...you’re not my real dad.

Did any active duty military get a TOL on this OTS bid?

Hoping for a TOL! My current contract ends in June so I was going to use this position as a reason to not re-up full time... also have a 1 year deployment coming up but got my leadership to hold off on slotting me, in case I get an offer.

Are you atc already?

Okay I have a question regarding the medical. About 2 months ago, I got a TOL for Alaska FSS, which is FAA and it is a 2152 position. I flew through the CIL portion, MMPI (got my results 3 days after testing), and my medical exam portion just got sent in. On Friday I got a TOL for ATC. I know the clearance is different, but it's the exact same medical that I'm completing right now. Will they make me go through all the same stuff for medical, or can they slide it over? Will I have to retake the mmpi?

you wont have to redo anything

Alright so I received a TOL and I think now would be a good time to ask some questions that I've had pertaining to the job. I'd really appreciate it if someone could fill me in on some of this.

-- From my understanding TRACON deals with ascending/descending, the go between from enroute to terminal. How does one eventually get a TRACON position? Do they do the terminal route at the academy? Do they have to get good at terminal and then do additional training for TRACON?

--An up/down facility is one that has both tower (terminal) and TRACON working in close proximity to each other?

--Hypothetically say you pass terminal at the academy and get assigned to a level 4-7 tower. You then become certified there and do well. I assume you then are able to move up to a level 8-10 tower?

--D side/R side. Do these terms only pertain to center/enroute controllers?

--I see people at the academy referring to non-radar and radar problems. What's the basic gist of these? Are these only related to enroute?

--Location is fairly important to me but I'm not going to bitch about it if it doesn't work out in my favor. How often are people able to transfer to their preferred location? Only if that preferred location has open availability I presume?

Any info at all on this stuff will help. Thanks.

Terminal RADAR Approach Control (TRACON) is Terminal and you CAN get assigned to a TRACON out of the academy, most likely an Up/Down facility which is a Tower and an Approach Control in one facility. OR you if you applied to N90 specific bids then you can possibly go there, I don't think any academy guys get sent to TRACONs like S56/S46/U90/Y90. There is RTF, TSEW, and TETRA there is probably info on these courses somewhere on this forum.

It is possible, but it is up to the manning at your facility and if the place you want to transfer to can pick up people.

--D side/R side. Do these terms only pertain to center/enroute controllers?
R-Side = guy who is actually talking to airplanes
D-Side = guy who helps the R-Side by doing coordination for them and other assist functions.

I'm not sure if you want a basic explanation of RADAR vs non-RADAR or info about the problems at the academy, but it can apply to enroute and terminal.

I answered above, putting it as simply as I could hopefully it helps.
This video is the best one I found on a quick search of what the different ATC facilities do.
The acting is kinda cringey though.. lol
