To those of you that got TYS, Knoxville is a beautiful place. Just have to love the color orange. Airport is south of the city, so Maryville and Alcoa/Louisville are the best bets on places to live. You have super quick access to GSMNP. And for better or worse, you’d talk to me a few times a month.

Cirrus has a plant there, so a good mix of vision jets and SR-22s coming through. Air and Army National Guard both have a base there. Fair amount of airline and GA traffic as well.

I remember that place when it was to be avoided. 10/10 it’s solid.

It use to be about really bad about 6-10 years ago. I've heard nothing but good things.

Experience: KCBM radar approach for 6 years [340K annual ops more or less]. Did TERPS for 4 years but did not control aircraft [finishing the 4th year now]. A little worried there are no dedicated radar facilities, but it is what it is. Guess I am learning a new skill - windows.

well just so everyone else is aware Midwest contract towers do not count as experience for getting the D level pay bands.... just in case anyone was expecting that if you do not have 52 weeks DOD or military experience they will only offer you AG pay even if you have several years experience

I also emailed HR, its true. wish i knew that before making my choices so im lucky i got a facility near family. couldnt imagine living in st pete on 60k a year

Yep from HR and on my FOL. Only 2152 dod/CIV time counts towards d level pay. I had 48 weeks with a cto military side but it had to be 52 for d pay. I have 2 years contract but they said that does not count for anything other than being able to apply for prior exp bids.

Area supposedly was just a college town and nothing else too it (doesn't sound bad to me, but wasn't this person's cup of tea). But. That was also 5 years ago or so! Good luck!

Wow. That must be a somewhat recent change. I definitely didn’t have 52 weeks in the military with my CTO and when I got picked up from the contract tower I was D2 starting out. But it’s been years since I got in and it seems like the FAA likes to change its policies constantly. (NCEPT, Reinstatement, etc.)

I also got a friend at MDT, I DMd Catawise. He told me they were about to swallow up RDGs airspace so leaving won’t be as easy for a bit.

Maybe someone from SBN can speak for current culture but i heard the same as you back in 2018. Two people i talked to that worked there then told me to stay away unless you were willing to die there. They’ve let several go on NCEPT lately and we’re getting an inbound from there in the next two months. Possible things might’ve changed quite a bit

Someone I used to be stationed at Whidbey with is there now and he has nothing but good things to say. Grain of salt always, but I’m also from near by with a lot of family there and the cost of living vs. the pay is hard to beat. Honestly would have it as my #1 but my wife wanted MDT first so ?. At this point it’s in the FAA’s hands either way. ?
