yeah in most political debates in the US people don’t even agree on the definition of the terms, let alone whether or not the problem actually exists. then some of us try and argue with those people about the details of specific actions to solve that problem as if that’s ever going to work.

Yeah. Learning to read (like, really read, not just see the words on the page) would be huge, but I don’t pretend to know how to fix that. Frankly, whether children or adults, people would get a lot more out of education or debates if they were interested in learning from it. Most aren’t. For a long time I wasn’t. Society rewards A’s and W’s, not bettering yourself. I don’t have any answers for that.

Long term progressive progress towards and education system that rewards independent thought and critical thinking and not standardized testing for placement and advancement.

But much like environmental issues, thats too hard to accomplish so screw it. Gotta make sure we are churning out wage slaves to feed the economy. I mean whatever shall we do if we don't have uneducated people to work a register in Walmart or a dude saddled with tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt taking entry level median wage jobs?

Edit-also, just reading. Like pick up a book. Anything. Even fiction helps you think about things more clearly if you read something beyond mindless pulp.

We had a new idea for government and an economy. And now government and economics is how people define themselves. If you can care about and value yourself and your education outside of your job and political party, that’s a great start.

BUT the difficulty is that many people literally can’t afford to make a choice that isn’t valued by the economy.

Eh. I don’t think so. No one wants to be an electrician or plumber or welder or mechanic in high school cus they aren’t exposed to it. These are all valuable high prying jobs.

No they need to teach that stuff. Obviously you have to have minimum standards, you can't just let people learn whatever they want to learn, period, but that standard being aimed purely at prepping people for passing tests for college entrance when a lot of people don't go that route, or assuming being a fact sponge makes you educated is the problem. The whole process is jacked in my opinion. It's incredibly hard to have a system where you base everything around testing and still allow critical thinking to develop independent thought.

That's on top of no education on how the system in the real world works, when it comes to insurance, credit scores, budgeting etc, which is a whole different can of educational worms.

Yeah, there’s a lot of crossover, and not all of that stuff is necessary or even good. Personally I’m not at all tied to the idea of the 4 (5?) primary subject model. But we shouldn’t turn school into a career machine. That’s why high school curriculums are basically learning how to shut up and wait in line.
