Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-18-ALLSRCE-57792

I read through the requirements for the medical and it says your eyes need to be correctable to 20/20. I went to my eye doctor just for peace of mind and he said my eyes are definitely correctable to 20/20. Will they give me an eye test to prove this or do I need to go into the medical with my eyes already corrected to 20/20 with glasses/contacts?

They'll give you an eye test, and you need to be able to see 20/20 with or without lenses. If you can't, they'll fail you and make you come back once you have glasses. So if you need glasses to see 20/20, you should get those.

Speaking of the vision test can someone that has gone through the color portion discribe how that goes? I’ve heard they you the Ishihara Plates to test color vision, and personally I have trouble with that. What happened in a occasion where someone can’t see the numbers in the Ishihara plates?

Then you will fail the medical and eventually be contacted to take a secondary color test. Depending upon the results from that test you may either not be hired or be limited to which type of equipment you are allowed to work on.

Then you will fail the medical
Elaboration on that point:
ATC medicals are deferred to the Regional Flight Surgeon for a decision. If an applicant doesn't pass a portion of the medical during the visit, it's not considered a "failed exam."
I didn't pass the 20/20 vision portion on my initial ATC medical. Went to my eye doctor and he completed a form saying my vision was 20/20 and sent that in. I do not have to check the box #13 "Has your airman certificate ever been denied, suspended, or revoked?' since it was deferred.

Does anyone know what the secondary color test is after the isihara? From the examples of the color plates I've seen there is no way I could pass that. I'm corrected to 20/20 and am not colorblind.

Yea same here, I could differentiate colors out side of the Ishihara plates. I just can’t see all the numbers within the Ishihara plates. So I’m not sure if to even try when that day comes, or to be truthful to the doc and tell him I’ve tried this before and I’m not able to see them to well.

Do you guys think they will send more TOLs for this bid? It’s possible, since the shut down is costing the government a lot of money, that they might not send anymore for this bid. What do you all think?

Last bid I was referred and missed the initial wave of TOL's, and was told that there should be more coming. But I don't remember anything other than hearing 1 or 2 people say they got one after the 1st wave. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I remember.

Keeping hope alive babyyyyy

Dude, there's literally no way to know. I got my class date 30 days after I got a TOL, but there are also plenty of people from the 2016 bid still waiting on class dates. Having your security clearance might help a bit, but for most people that doesn't hold them up - I got my conditional clearance 3 days after I submitted the e-QIP. Usually the medical is what holds people up, and it often just has to do with the workload of your region's AME even if you get everything done right away, and there's nothing you can do about it. And then of course if you get a Tier 2 for any reason, that'll add months or years to the process. But don't stress out about that - overthinking and trying to beat the MMPI is the best way to fail the MMPI .

30 days nice...im guessing your record was clean with no past health problems. what region was your flight surgeon?

What about if you have 20/20 vision in one eye and 20/50 in the other eye? I havent been to a doctor but I took an online vision test and thats what it said. I have no trouble seeing anything in day to day life but just wondering since one eye is considerably worse than the other will they still fail me.

Get it corrected to 20/20 before your medical. It’s simple

Go to an actual optometrist for a test, it doesn't cost too much and get glasses to have it corrected to 20/20. You'll get a test done anyway at medical but for peace of mind, you can try getting an optometry appt beforehand.
