Exp hire after academy washout

I'm just trying to find some info, but does anyone know from either personal experience or know someone that had failed the ATC academy, then join the military (AF, Marines), got all their certifications WITH the 52 weeks experience (or more), reapplied to get back into the FAA and get denied? I'm trying to figure out why it would happen or what is their reasoning behind it if it has happened.

PM me or leave it in the thread. Any info is high appreciated, thanks.

There are a lot of factors that can cause you to get not referred. The main reason I’ve seen people not get a TOL is that they had too much time remaining in service. I think I’ve also seen on the OTS bids that they say they won’t accept academy failures.

If you can give more info on your situation then people can help give you more of an educated guess. If not you can call HR and ask why you weren’t referred.

I had a guy in my class that washed out of the Academy, and was going to attempt the route you are looking into. Before he did he asked HR if he would be able to get back in through a prior experience bid and they told him no. He even attempted to apply on another bid and was told he wouldn't get a TOL since he was an AAC wash out. I'm sure that's not what you want to hear but if you really want to do ATC the FAA isn't the only option. Outside of the military there's the ATC school in Georgia that will get you a CTO then I've heard you may have the option to work at one of there towers after you graduate.

I'm basically this situation. I washed out by 3 points, and I just got qualified for ATC through the AF. I just wanted to know if what I heard was possibly true. I think its crazy that even with certs and everything they want at that point, they still wont take you. I asked HR the other day and they basically said that IF i had those certs, to reapply for the experienced bid and try again that way. My end game was FAA because i wanted to work at certain big name facilities. I got a taste of it and I want it bad, and the fact I missed it by so little, I feel like I should chase it. If i blew it by like 30 points instead of 3, I would of made my peace with it.

Back in the day (08’-10’) of mass hiring there were several cases of people who failed the academy, reapplied and were rehired for the academy as the HR and application systems were so bad nothing flagged that in the application process. The FAA sucks like that.

Eventually they moved to correct this by swinging the other way and always denying 100% of the time the applications of people who were previous academy failures, even people in your case where in all logic and rational they should be given a chance to be hired. The FAA sucks like that.

If you have the credentials now then reapply on a prior experience bid once you are close to potentially separating from the military. Worst they can do is say no and then you can re-enlist or get out and do contracting some where

I do know that in the last year academy wash outs have been going to the academy. The circumstances I’m not sure of.

Prior experience bids don’t require academy attendance so it wouldn’t make sense to me why you couldn’t get hired.

Though if you’re active duty Air Force you might as well just do 20 years and at least cover your arse with a pension.

I am still referred on the July OTS bid even though, I highly doubt it'll lead me anywhere considering about 2 weeks ago they completely denied me for the N90 bid. I am more than likely going to join the Air Force for ATC since I qualified for it. Im 24 right now, so plenty of time to try again as an experienced guy when I get to that bridge.

I just wanted to see what other people have either experienced or seen so I know what to potentially expect.

It seems like they’ve given washouts a chance throughout the years. It seems like if you don’t get anything from the July bid by the time a new OTS bid opens then go enlist. MAKE SURE it specifically says it’s for air traffic control then do your time.

Oh definitely, anything I sign I read. Luckily my recruiter understands I'm not signing any paperwork that isn't ATC, and hes willing to work with me.

I can attest that there have recently been second chances offered, whether intentionally or not, by the FAA.

Ironically enough, it may be easier to get back in if you end up resigning before evals than if you fail the evals.

That's the key. If you know you're going to fail just resign.

I washed out Febuary 8th, 2018 on my second eval during the en route course, but I did end up getting a TOL and now currently on my CIL for the prior experience bid. I made sure to indicate on my resume that I was previously a student that washed out, and I did have that long conversation with my HR POC, LM to honestly and absolutely make sure that sending a TOL my way wasn't a mistake.

I did 5 years active duty Army, 2 years ATC school, and ever since I washed out - I just stayed here and RPO'd in RTF, Terminal, TETRA, ER and soon Non radar.

For what it is worth, I washed out of the academy in 2014 through the enroute program. I was rehired under the prior experience bid in 2015 with the terminal track, and have been employed with the FAA since.

Aw man, MFD, that's where I want to go, having been picked up on the prior experience track. I want your life lol

If you don't mind me asking, how did someone as experienced as you washout? Are evals that difficult?

I wish I saw it coming, I probably would of pulled that.
I only needed a minimum of 41 to pass.

After the CIL are they going to give you a list of facilities and then bypass the academy? It would suck to have to go back.
