with NY mandatory quarantine no ones coming here. MMU is my busiest airport now.
I mean I get it, but with what seems to be about half the people back on bws or something close to it, and most of the rest seemingly back on 5/5, it's kind of mind blowing yall are still on 5/10 what with the staffing and normal traffic levels there. Hell we were never on 5/10 at all because of staffing and our numbers are better than yours by a bit. Especially because new York seems to be doing better than a lot of places with covid.

I mean good on you guys, milk it for all its worth I say, but damn, I can see how people think things about n90 when they see stuff like that.

I haven’t had more than 10 planes on freq (including VFR) since March and that’s working the whole area combined.

Amidst all of this I’m glad the FAA still hiring and giving some TOLs. They can’t just cut it off.
Why can't they? Massive airline layoffs start tomorrow, passenger count is still at less than 30% of last year with no catalyst to increase in sight, and Most facilities are still so overstaffed that they're on 5/5 at a minimum. Nav Canada just yeeted all their trainees. I would expect career advancement to be severely stifled in the years ahead. I think we'll see very few new hires in the years ahead as big facilities are able to combine scopes and they inevitably get downgraded and their CPC target numbers reduced. Virus numbers are once again spiking and layoffs are coming down hard throughout the economy (See in the last 24 hours Disney laying off 28k, Allstate 3800, Shell 9k.) State budgets are completely fucked and extended unemployment won't last forever. Sad to say but my original thesis is looking more and more likely everyday.

The smart thing to do is to offer a buyout to some of the older controllers if it comes to anything like what Nav Canada did. You can’t stop hiring altogether and create a bubble. I agree things aren’t trending well. But I can tell you that there are plenty, not a majority but plenty that are 5/5 and only holding onto that because the hard working controllers are pushing 2 hours on 20 mins off and not making a sound. We’re one of them and the majority of shifts were 12-15 positions open and 18 controllers per shift if we don’t have someone bang in. But it’s better to work hard and not bitch about our job because 1) it’s 5/5 2) most importantly it’s our job. And we’re only at 55% of last years ops.

American said they’ll wait on furloughs pending bailout. Airlines have added a lot of vacation destinations for winter and passenger counts are still trending up WOW. we’ll see.
