Hiring Bid FAA-ATO-18-ALLN90-54212

I read all the negative things on these forums about how difficult it will be to certify at n90 and that they are just throwing bodies at the facility and things like that. So what happens to everyone who doesn’t certify there? Do they just get sent to a lower level facility? If so, do they get options of where to go?

If you’re hired on the local N90 bid (the one where you had to reside within 50 miles) if you don’t certify you’re done. They didn’t want people applying to it as an easy way into the Agency, so there is no NEST option. At least that is what I have heard. If they stick to that who knows.

Yes I applied and was given a TOL for that bid. What’s the difference if pure hired via that bid or a nationwide bid after the academy? If you successfully pass the academy no matter which bid you were hired through they would still to that point have used the same resources to train you as anyone else from any other bid. I find it hard to believe they would just kick you to the curb. Do you think HR would have an further information in regards to this?

I got my TOL today. Hopefully you get yours soon!

How do I find out which FAA facility is closest to me? I'm assuming it's JFK, is there a website or directory listing where I can input my ZIP and I'll know for sure? Does this matter since the TOL states I'll be assigned to N90 on successful training?

For anyone applying from Suffolk County it's going to be FRG or ISP. I took my MMPI at FRG back in the day and its way less of a hassle than JFK or LGA.

The bid literally said "Individuals who do not successfully complete training at the FAA Academy and all other necessary requirements will have their employment terminated".

Because they don’t want people getting hired on this bid as an easy way in to just deliberately wash out to go somewhere else. You can thank a lot of people before you for scamming the system by doing just that (and with $27k in move money thrown in!)

Okay that makes sense, now I know what you meant when you said the easy way in thing earlier. I was under the impression this was the first time they released a bid specific to Westbury. Thank you for the input!

It is the first OTS bid specific to Westbury. The competition is a lot less to get referred on this bid than the national bid, so it’s an easy way in

The scamming was people that went there and didn't even try. As long as the NEST program is in effect, there's no way an initial-hire will be terminated just for failing to certify. If someone doesn't even make it out of the labs and withdraws/fails, then sure I can see termination being very likely. Make it through labs but no position certifications, I don't know...but should be case-by-case basis at that point. Get some sort of position cert, I don't see any way they're not retained through the NEST for somewhere.
Plus, some may not even want to move out of NYC.

The FAA basically had to get a court ordered waiver to be allowed to do a local bid. That’s why the bid was so delayed from their initial announcment. Highly possible that the court stipulated in order to have a local bid that those hired could only work at this facility so as not to negatively impact those who have to apply on the national bid.

Oh and anyone who brings me a pack of F5 IPA from OKC will get my extreme gratitude

I see that you're working at N90... what would you say are the big things that make this facility so difficult to work at? I know NYC has a very congested airspace... TBH, when I was taking the ATSA I felt like I wasn't doing well enough, and I had already resigned myself to the fate that I would not be getting the referral.

I'm really happy I got the TOL, I have every intention of working my ass off to get certified if I pass academy, but those are just words, the real make it or break it happens at the facility. What should we be expecting?

Chopped up airspace it’s the main cause of difficulty here. Every altitude is taken by planes going to different airports that belong to someone else so you’re stuck with 2 altitudes to work with. Your vectoring has to be on point. One missed gap or late turn and you’re down the shitter. Unlike a lot of big airports, we don’t have STARS that take you to final. They dump the plane off at the border and it’s vectors after that. Because of the way the departures have to be routed to avoid the 4 other major airports means that the Bravo airspace is pretty much dedicated to departures so your arrival corridors are inundated by VFR traffic trying to kill people. In EWR area we have 3 finals that go through another airports class D and 5 finals that intersect but only 2 altitudes to separate so you’re making and hitting gaps. And all your departures are aimed at each other.

Then there’s the whole Long Island thing. Not a factor for this group since you guys are from Long Island but nobody who isnt from Long Island likes it here.

There's people though that applied to the National openings and were switched to N90 because they were from the northeast US. Once someone is hired, it's all the same set of rules.
Although there is/was the Retired Military Controllers that are/were limited to 5 years....but then those are stipulated to be on a 5 year contract....who knows, we'll find out what happens before too long I'm sure with the new N90 people.

What do they have to do with the local area bid? But yes we’ll know one way or the other within 6 months is my guess

I understood about half of that... I'll revisit this if I get to academy to make better sense of it.

Regarding the Long Island thing... lived there for 7 years. Realized my head was starting to go up my ass. It's not so bad if you're only going to Westbury for work though?

Depends where you live I guess. I live in Huntington and it takes me about 20 min. Our shifts keep you out of rush hour for the most part.

That’s what it was normally but this last years OTS bid was a little different, there was some EODS paperwork and basics stuff they sent before CIL. I imagine that’s the new process. We all got that a month or so after TOL then another month or so before CIL stuff started rolling in

Looks like you're right. I got my EODS paperwork this morning. Just two days after getting the TOL. They seem to be absolutely flying through this N90 bid.

Is it common for someone to live in the city and work at N90? Brooklyn or Manhattan? Got a TOL and am probably looking too far into the future right now, but just want to know that's realistic with the commute.

Bunch of people live in Queens and Brooklyn. Don’t know of anyone in Manhattan but you probably can’t afford it until you’re CPC anyway. Hell I don’t know people on AG pay will survive at all. I felt broke as shit at D1 pay.
