Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-16-ALLSRCE-49075 Bid

During the March 2015 Bid, the earliest people got a class date was 7 months after applying (some people got clearances completed in under a month - currently, medical alone is taking a couple months). There are also people that will be over 2 years before they get to the academy (that is without any issues during the process). I was around 20 months.

Damn 20 months! I guess it is better to just study the basics that they sent us over and over again until its time haha.
Thanks buddy!

No problem. Those online basics lessons are almost exactly what you do in class, so learning it now will greatly help you - although it is not required. It will likely cut back on the time you got to study after class/weekends (although you should still do study sessions with your group to build camaraderie)

I don't think I can handle another 20 months at this placeholder job.... I would rather quit and be broke until my class date

Yikes, that's pretty bad. Just remember that being broke (not paying bills) is a quick way to not get your security clearance granted. Also, it's good to have some money saved up. You can file your travel claim & first per diem after 15 days (15 actual days, not business days). If you have money saved up, you can pay out of pocket and (unless your housing takes the full per diem) pocket the extra money.

@rdyotz - I see you went to Initial Tower. How many were in your class? and out of that how many failed? and out of the ones that failed what is your opinion of why they failed?

IIRC that was partly due to issuing all of the TOLs at once instead of waves and the hiring process change in '16 slowed HR down.

I am still at the academy - in basics now. A lot of what I have started has been based on classes ahead of me. The last 3 classes have only passed 12,11,10 out of 18 I believe. One of the common reasons I have heard for failing is because they didn't join the group. Although there have been people that never joined study groups and got the highest score in class. As well as people that go to every group event and fail.

FAA Aviation Careers HR verified receipt of my acceptance paperwork yesterday (sent it in two days ago, via e-mail); I will update when I hear anything else!

The real reason people fail, is they let their nerves get the best of them. Once you get behind it's nere impossible to get caught up. We did the study groups weekly and the 5 that failed from my class went to every study group, basically dont get caught up in why people fail worry about keeping calm and remember what you were taught.

Thanks for the advice! It really helps to know what the best practices are at the academy.

I took the ATSA
Im a 5 point vet
My green box still says referred on AVIATOR
Obviously since I'm only a 5point vet, I didn't get a TOL last Friday.
What if I don't get one at all? When/how would I know that I haven't been picked?
If I don't get picked, am I still eligible for the next bid?
If so, would I need to take the ATSA again and all?

Lots of questions, I know. Thanks!

That's the thing with USAJOBS, I've applied to about 30 jobs, and only 2 have told me "not selected". Hopefully the FAA does a better job of not keeping it's candidates waiting.

As far as the other questions, I'm not sure.

I wouldn't bank on this.
