Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-17-ALLSRCE-53474

Anyone care to elaborate on the personalities/traits of successful controllers? Does it vary or do you current controllers find that many of your colleagues have the same kind of personalities/styles/attitudes? I feel like i'm confident in knowing what my own personal strengths and weaknesses are, and i'm curious how applicable they are to this position.

This would make an interesting thread on its own. I also wouldn't mind seeing a thread on what jobs/careers people are leaving to become controllers.

EDIT: New thread created on what job you're leaving.

Looking for some advice or insight if any of you are pilots are can relate. Now that people are getting dates so soon its starting to hit me. Ive applied for 3 previous bids but now its becoming reality. I went to school for atc in hopes of becoming a controller and really enjoyed doing it. While I was in school i realized how hard and competitive it would be to actually become one. So in the meantime, I start working on a backup plan and picked up flying and ended up loving it. Now I have been a CFI for a bit and have many open doors as far as career paths. I know being a pilot will potentially better me as a controller but I'm torn between the two. I really wish I could do both but I know it doesn't work like that. I figured I'd at least give the Academy a shot. Any input is appreciated.
Sometimes life is easy. Let fate decide.

Pass the academy? ATC
Fail the academy? Pilot

I've known plenty of people in your shoes. Most have bought planes once certified, some still CFI at other airports, and others have missed flying so much they left ATC to join a regional carrier. One thing is for certain, having lucrative fall-back options is a wonderful thing. Congrats on utilizing your time wisely.

Ability to adapt to changing situations quickly is huge.

Thank you guys so much for the positive advice. Forgot to mention i am 25 so this is a big decision for me, as I don't want to waste time pursuing one, if I'm going to end up going with the other. Glad I asked the question on this thread, as you can imagine when I ask my pilot buddies I do not get the same responses. I will definitely be giving the Academy a shot.

90% of controllers have the same personality. Type A. Always think they're right, crude sense of humor, sarcastic, outspoken and general outgoing.

Anybody have experience with KG asking for transcripts and waiting period between that and CIL. Sent scripts a couple days ago.

Prior life issues don't ALWAYS cause a denial of an interim clearance do they?

Had a minor financial discrepancy about four years ago, Filled out my SF86 on a weekend and that Monday my security POC IMMEDIATELY emailed me asking for documentation that it was resolved, which I provided. Hopefully that cleared it up and I don't wind up in the "denied clearance" boat. I'm sure she didn't ask for that information for no reason.

Someone talk me down here. Took my blood sugar when I woke up this morning and it was 109. So 10 points over the recommended level of someone without diabetes. I realize the physical relies on a urine test for ketones, but I have no idea how that correlates to blood sugar. Anyone able to provide some insight? My physical is about 72 hours away, so I'm a little concerned to say the lease.

What's got me even more confused is that the ketones they are testing can be there as a result of low insulin. But they can also be there when your body is in ketosis, from eating a low carb diet. But carbs and sugar increase your blood sugar levels. So what they heck is a guy supposed to do?

Put your timelines in your signatures. It's not for you, it's for the hundreds or even thousands of other people that will view this thread in the near term and for future bids.

To answer my own question above... yes you can have a less than 100% perfect history and be granted a conditional clearance, as I myself have! WOO! Just waiting on medical to clear!

How'd you find that out? Did you email your HR POC?
