Hiring Bid Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee: FAA-ATO-18-ALLSRCE-57792

I can't decide whether to drive or fly there.

If I fly then I can use the shuttle service while I'm there but have no car to join possible study groups
If I drive it takes like 4 days to get there

That's kind of my stress as well (for when I eventually go to the academy). Hopefully you are able to update this board with whatever you decide to do, and list some pros/cons after a few weeks/months. The thought of spending 4 months without a car is doable, but only if there is some courtesy cars available for a run to the grocery store or a quick gym session

I know some of the housing options do have courtesy cars but I forget which ones. I know Kim's doesn't and that's where I wanna stay. Regardless, saving up as much money as you can before you go would help tremendously too.

My story's little dramatic lmao. I was a history major (one of the many majors I bounced around to) and I had a complete meltdown one day about never making any money what am I gonna do with a history degree blah blah blah so I started looking at enlisting and I've always loved airplanes so the first one I looked into was the Air Force and as I was researching it I came across military atc and thought it was so cool and from there I looked at civilian atc and the CTI track for that so I dropped my history classes that day and enrolled at my CTI school for the following semester (it's a community college so it was easy) and never regretted that decision for a second. It took a full meltdown for me to find my dream job ?
Hey, we've all had that moment where we sit back and say "I'm not happy with where I'm at." I wasn't even looking for a job, I work in Telecom for a big company, had the idea of retiring with a pension and 401k here. I was just browsing on Reddit one day and I happened to see a post on there about the bid opening for anyone to apply, with a priority to veterans. So, I thought fuck it, let's give it a shot and see what happens. If I don't make it, at least I can say I tried. I always had an eye for Aviation (went to college for a Aviation Maintenance degree, never finished), and I love tech, so it sounds like the best of both worlds.
I give my wife shit because she was always getting on to me about being on Reddit all the time, but here I am about to get an amazing job out of it :)

My HR POC told me today it would be 2-6 months for their office to receive the medical clearance. This is fine with me since I have some obligations that I'd like to not have to cancel (though I will if I have to). But it looks like May would be the earliest for me if everything goes well.

Who's your medical POC and did they say why ?

So how did y'all hear about this job?
I was in college and not really knowing what I wanted to do and struggling with it. My wife's step brother in law is a controller and always talks about how great the job is and I decided to give it a shot because lots of aspects of the job appealed to me. I have been with the same job for a while and was able to qualify based on work experience, so I decided to apply. Now here I am, (im)patiently awaiting my FOL.

If you can, fly out and rent a car. I know that rental bill will stack up over the 3-4 months you'll be there but that's my plan anyway lol. Still gonna take the shuttle to class but use the car for the gym and grocery shopping and just general freedom

I looked into renting a car but I think it was like 600/month. It'd be nice if there were courtesy cars.

That’s exactly how I feel. And yeah I’ll definitely try to post in this thread with some updates and pros/cons and such
