ATC automation is on a multi-decade timeline. No one hired tomorrow should worry about it for most/all of their career.
But it's also important to think about the future of ATC in conjunction with the future of aviation.
Does anyone really think there are going to be LESS drones in the future? It might be a mostly automated process, but you'll still need people keeping the guardrails. Does that mean more defined SUAs in metro areas that need to be actively controlled around? Or maybe dedicated ultra low-altitude tracon positions?
Does anyone really think air travel is going to DECLINE in the long run? Will air travel get faster or slower? Will there be even larger airplanes with more souls on board?
Extrapolating the exponential increase of the precision in technology, how will that precision impact future separation standards? Will technology be trusted enough to whittle lateral and vertical standards down even more?
Automation is real, but it's much more likely to be a significant tool ATC will use over the coming years & decades rather than being a job-killer.
