Medical Losing medical after becoming CPC

Hey everyone, I’ve been a CPC for about 4 years and looks like I’m going to lose my medical more than likely permanently if I choose to get treated with the medicine. Options include… support specialist?

Currently at a center, are there any medical disqualifications for support specialist? I see it says it does not require a medical but just curious, I obviously do not want to just get fired.

They’ll prolly find you some job that doesn’t require a medical. It might be at a neighboring facility tho

I guess that’s assuming they isn’t an opening at my current one? Is there any sort of choice, or just, here you go. Either way I’d be thankful, but still.

Yah at a center chances are they have something. Maybe training department or something else.

I doubt they're going to do the legwork for you. If you can't hold a medical they'll likely get you admin duties for awhile but you'll have to apply for staff jobs or work on getting a medical retirement. They're not just going to ask you what you'd like to do and hand it to you on a silver platter. You're at a center, you have tons of options. Support specialist, QC, training specialist, etc

Academy instructor, support specialist and manager. I believe also OM. Worse comes to worse you can look at other fed agencies/ jobs

Nor am I asking them to, I was just asking what my options are, I see support specialist often mentioned, and I see postings for them as well, not requiring medical as just curious how the process works.

Appreciate the list! I believe the support specialist positions sound the most promising, I suppose I’d have to reach out to various places and explain the situation when trying to get hired by them as well. I’ve never been in this sort of position. I wouldn’t even know how to look into other agencies or positions in the FAA

No problem! Depending on the conditon/disability it may need to disclosed if it could affect your job, but there should be accommodations made and it shouldn't negatively impact your hirability. Everything is on USAjobs. You would need to just search the openings and bid them. All the jobs I mentioned earlier are found by searching 2152 on USAjobs. What I meant is if you want to stay local you might want to consider other fed jobs like USPS, VA, DoD , DOE, etc... You should save your pay to the maximum of the pay band that you apply for

I would imagine they would love to get another position filled, I’m definitely not trying to do a medical retirement, just looking to stay in the agency in any form I can.

Yeah. It’s a benefit you pay for being a union member. They’ll collect your name and DOB but they won’t send anything to the flight surgeon. They should be able to tell you your options and if a special medical issuance is possible

Several facilities are looking to fill staff jobs but aren’t putting out bids because the process for releases takes so long. try to talk to neighboring facilities if they have any openings. If you’re permanently dq’d from working traffic you can request an err and it will go through the managers and the regions to approve the transfer. They have nothing to loose at that point since you wont be on the boards anymore.

Yeah I suppose I’d have to reach out to surrounding facilities. I see the service area is hiring on usajobs, I wonder how often those positions are open, it seems like it may be interesting to see how they affect the operation.

your natca rep should be able to find you a temporary position at the center you work at. training ,QA, airspace etc.

I've seen controllers work temp. assignments for 20 years then retire as controllers

Aside from looking for jobs to transition in to as a few have said above. ask your atm/facrep/other support managers and support people for a job or as this is important telling them you are interested and don’t want to leave. Then Do some work outside the operationonce you get grounded. Go to each department or person and find work that needs to be done show your worth. Knowing you are interested and that you have shown some ability makes it a whole lot easier to approve you for the job.
