Twice a year on my FDT trips I want to become a pilot. Then 20 minutes into the flight I’m bored out of my mind.

I did my first FDT this year before corona came and thought it was really cool on the way out. Then I rode in a 737 on the way back and wanted to jump out of the plane after 2 hours because my ass and back hurt so much.

Fuck that plane. Although I’d rather sit in a 737 versus the “perch of death” in the 757. Airbus have the most comfortable (and easy to get out) seat. 777’s look inviting but after 30 minutes it’s like sitting on a rock carved to look like a chair. The E175 was surprisingly comfortable, but it’s pretty cramped. Thankfully the only times I flew on it was with my best friend who was a Captain at Skywest at the time and she’s like 5’2, so I had pretty good leg room.

If you ever have the opportunity, and I think the only way now is UPS, ride on a 747. I did SFO-ORD a few years back with United and that flight deck is like a fucking apartment.

i like to think that now that I’ve steeled myself by doing 6 hours in the 737 pullout seat that nothing can phase me. But I’ll keep that in mind. We have a ups flight ops at an airport nearby but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 747 go there. We have fedex at my airport mostly DC10s and a300.

I’ve heard the DC10 is awesome, too. And cargo is my next trip. People say it’s so easy, you have a seat before you even leave for the airport, and no TSA

Ya my original plan growing up was flying, then I started flying and was like..... This is kinda lame. Once the cool airplane factor wears off its like driving long distance, which I hate. Still fun to go up in a Cessna every now and again, but that's about it.

Y'all losers dont know how to fam, what you do is book the DAL A330 JFK-LAX and then "once the boarding door closes" the captain will "forcibly insist" that you vacate the cockpit for "operational considerations" and then you "begrudgingly" follow the flight attendant back to one of the open business class lay-flats. It's the fucking worst, hate when that happens.

The DC-10 jumpseat is huge. So much better than a 737.

FedEx is easy. You call 24 hours before the flight. I’ve only even bumped once and I knew ahead of time I would be. UPS is also easy and you call them way in advance...I think 10 days.

It's a good thing those NYC-LA direct flights always have open business seats...

I've been pushed to the back a couple times, never in J seats, though. The 777/787 flight decks are nice enough. FDT is at least in the top 5 for coolest parts of being ATC.
