What happens to certified controllers that develop an illness through the course of the career? For example, say that someone is otherwise perfectly healthy when they are first hired but develop migraines a couple of years before they are set to retire or someone develops depression from the death of close family members a couple of years into their career. Do they get fired? Put on "desk" duty until they can work or otherwise put on disability? Or do most people at facilities hide such diagnoses or avoid medical treatment all together?

All depends on whether or not it’ll cause said person to lose their medical or not.

What I am saying is, if it is a medical situation that can lead to someone losing their medical. Do people typically tend to hide such disclosures for fear of losing their job or avoid medical treatment altogether? What happens if you are at risk or do lose medical permanently? Does someone that loses medical a year before retirement lose some or all of their retirement benefits had they not health issues?

You can retire medically. The requirements are pretty easy to meet. The agency is supposed to try to find another suitable job if you're so inclined, but it's not a guarentee.

I think some people sometimes neglect health issues due to not wanting something on a record. Then an issue can become exacerbated or turn into more problems.

You bang out till you have no leave left. Then you convince management to advance you 240 hours of leave...use all that. Then you go on the leave Donor list get positive again and repeat the cycle
